    I purchased a refurbished Compaq laptop (from Compaq) that came with Windows XP Home Edition and several other programs (e.g. Norton AV, Microsoft Money, etc.) preinstalled. When I went through the XP setup procedures, it asked me to "name" my computer (in a box where its serial number was displayed). I entered something whimsical (i.e. it seemed like a good idea at the time) but now I've changed my mind (since XP is frequently referring to my laptop by that name) and I would like to change the name. Is there any way that I can re-name my computer without re-installing XP and all the other software on it? I'd be grateful for any help.

    Also, will I have to register Windows XP within 30 days to keep it functioning? The Compaq manual mentioned that I would be informed during setup if "activation" was required but it was never mentioned; so I'm wondering if the fact that mine is a refurbished computer means that its XP has already been activated?

    I apologize if these are really stupid questions but I'm pretty new to computers (and Windows in particular).

    Hi timescape - Welcome to the Board :)

    You can rename your computer via this route ....

    Right click on My Computer Icon > Properties > Computer Name - Change button and type in the name you want to use.

    Registration and Activation and two different things.There is no need to register your copy of XP if you don't want to, but all installations must be activated within 30 days or they stop functioning. As you no doubt have an OEM disk it is most likely activated by default. If it is not activated you will be reminded frequently by an annoying bubble popup in the Notification Area - bottom of the screen by the clock.
    No such thing as a dumb question around here :) We're here to help anyone and everyone so no question is too simple - just ask away :D

    Changing Computer name;

    Hey Pete,
    You directed me here from G4 forum.

    I had a different problem there, but I saw this so...

    I have my computer just named "main ", But when my documents and setting are displayed it has my full name in there. I think it comes from my user account. I had typed my full name, but my second name is spelled incorrectly. I tried to re-name it, but it tells me I can not re-name this. I went to "Start" and at the top clicked on my user account icon. I was able to re-spell it properly there, but it didn't apply to my account.
    Do you know why?
    Thanks

    PS maybe this is what timescape was referring to.

    :confused: :confused:

    You can rename your User Account by this route ....

    Control Panel > User Accounts > Change an Account - pick the account to change > Change my Name.

    This does not rename the associated User Profile Folder. To do that you must edit the registry - back it up before you do so. Follow the steps outlined here ....

    How to rename or move a User Profile folder ?

    Changing user name;

    Thanks for the links Pete. I followed everything to the "T" and wasn't successful.

    I got to the last part and couldn't figure out how to actually change the name. I made it all the way in to the registry. I did learn a lot though. Now I have a second user account set up if I need it.

    My problem was no big deal, I can handle thing as is.
    Now if I can figure out what to do about a stuck pixel (it goes away if I rub it gently, but comes back after a while), but that's for another post

    Thanks, you'll be seeing me again.
