    Hi all,
I recently purchased a DVD burner in order to make backing up my system easier. As I already had a DVD player in my computer, I just removed the player and installed the burner in its place.
On reboot my computer no longer recognises the hard drive - I get a 'boot disk' error and BIOS doesn't recognise the drive. I have troubleshooted by testing each of my drives with the same IDE cable, first testing CD burner, then my secondary hard drive, then my new DVD burner - each works fine and is recognised by BIOS. Tried testing my hard drive again (with the same IDE cable) and it still fails.
I tried resetting the BIOS, just in case. But this doesn't seem to have helped at all. On a side note I did flash a new version to the BIOS the other day, but I'm positive this isn't the problem as I had no trouble until last night when I tried to install the DVD burner.
Also, it's a bit peculiar that the hard drive failed when I hadn't even touched it - only swapped over my old DVD player with the new DVD burner. Perhaps I knocked something when upgrading my DVD player?
Any ideas why BIOS won't recognise my hard drive?

EDIT: I have my hard drive jumper set to 'cable select'. Have also tried setting it to master, but no go. Both of my hdd's are Western Digital, 120GB. (my backup hard-drive works fine).

Actually, just saw this thread: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=53396
I suppose my hard drive is gone, as I've had exactly the same symptoms. I might try changing the HDD card as well, as my backup hard drive is exactly the same model.
Still open to suggestions though

After upgrading the BIOS you are usually required to set the BIOS settings to defaults (a passing point).

I would disconnect both drives and go into the BIOS, check that neither are shown. Shutdown, pull and reseat the the cables. [Are they both on the same cable?]. Set the HDD as master. Go into the BIOS settings. If it not seen, is there an "Identify Hard Disk Drive" menu? Don't try reconnecting the DVD unless the HDD appears.
Check that the BIOS is not set to "Quick POST ".

Next step is running the HDD manufacturer's utilities.

    Thanks for the response Mattman.
After coming back to try again, I reset the jumpers on both HDD's to 'cable select', played around with attaching the IDE cables, and managed to get everything working!
Luckily there's nothing wrong with my HDD, and I even managed to setup my other HDD as a slave and successfully installed my DVD burner in the process. :)
