    Hi,

I don't know how this happened, but IE no longer puts an http:// at the front of the address bar so I have to type it in to go anywhere. How do I get it back?

    Tom Frazer

PS. Forgot to add that I am using WinXP.

    LostFolder--
How are you or what is entering the address into the Address line? Site name, then Control+Enter? If so
    http://www.yourcomputerminute.com/2005/03/20/use-ctrl-enter-with-internet-explorer-and-save-typing/
    or many ideas here
    http://www.google.com/search?source...rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-31,GGLD:en&q=control+enter
Or if you are clicking on a link, it is possible the link is corrupt.
Is this happening all the time?

Normally I just type www.cnn.com let's say and hit enter and IE puts in the http:// by default. It stopped doing that several days ago. I will take a look at the links you gave and see if they can help. Let me know if you think of anything else.

    Thanks,

    Tom

Thanks, but I've done all that with no success. I've even gone into the dreaded registry and tried to enter http:// in the data field of the default URL registry. It still doesn't work. I use Netscape on my other computer and the more I deal with IE the happier I am with Netscape. How do people put up with all the security issues, etc. with IE.

LostFolder--Since you are comfortable editing the Registry, you may want to try editing per the attachment below.
Of course, make a back up of the Registry key before you make changes,
Download the attachment and rename DefaultPrefix.txt to DefaultPrefix.reg. Then click on the .reg file.
If you do not like the results, you can use the backup file you created to revert to the Registry settings prior to using the attachment.

    Jim,

Thanks for the registry editor. However, that didn't work either. Is there anyway to uninstall IE and then download and install it again?

solution for IE 6 not appending http://

I recently experienced this problem and found no reference on the web to the problem or a solution. I was having the exact problem and tracked it to an add-on in Internet Explorer 6. In the add-ons manager you can select to view currently loaded add-ons or add-ons that have been used...

In the list i spotted an add-on which looked questionable br*$%# somthing like that. The file associated with it was xx2gr.dll which is a click monitoring add-on for getright download program. I am not sure what broke it but i don't use the program anymore so i just uninstalled Getright. You can resolve the problem just by diabling the particular add on. I am guessing that LostFolder can identify the problem by trial and error. Just disable add-ons one at a time til you get it. Then enable the ones you want. Click monitoring routines are common in various programs while not sharing personal information it sends info about internet habits, user habits to the resident programs server "usually for product development and improvement ".

It is possible that it's a same type of issue, a problem with an add-on. However it does not have to be isolated to Getright. Good luck.

    Windows Update

Is because of the new Microsoft Windows update

You can either rename the file verclsid.exe and cancel the update or modiffy the registry:

    • Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software. The MS06-015 (908531) (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx) security update includes a "white list" VERCLSID.EXE will not scan any extension that appears on this list. Adding the HP shell extension corrects the problem. Manually edit the registry:1. Log on to the computer with an account with administrator privileges.
    2. Click the Start button and then click Run.
    3. Type Regedit and then click OK.
    4. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Cached
    5. Right-click "Cached ", point to New, click "DWORD Value ", and then enter: {A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9} {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401

    6. Set the Data of this value to 1
    7. Close the Registry Editor.
    8. Use Task Manager to end the Verclsid.exe process or restart the computer.

Note: If other third-party COM controls or shell extensions are determined to cause this issue, the same method must be used to add the appropriate shell extension.

visa666--The MS06-015 (908531) Update was not issued until April 11, but Lost Folder reported the problem on March 28. So I suspect MS06-015 (908531) is not at fault. But who knows?

visa666--redsoxfan24's news is indeed good. Now if Lost Folder gets the same result, you will be on to something. :)

P.S. This is the official list of problems that the 908531 Update can cause
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165
But I suspect the actual list is much longer.

visa666-- I knew you had found how to fix your problem and had been kind enough to help redsoxfan24.
But the point I was raising is whether LostFolder's problem would be fixed, since, based on the date of Post #1, that problem existed before the MS 908531 Update was available.
If the fix for the 908531 update also fixes earlier problems with http, that would be really interesting.
I hope LostFolder will be posting again.
