I was following a "How to bypass the Logon Dialog Box" tip on my Laptop. (toshiba with XP Home SP2).

Now I have a real problem - I can't get into it at all. When I boot up I get a Dialog Box saying " Log On to Windows, User Name. Administrator......
Password ....... " When I try clicking OK (not entering any password-as I've never used one) another box appears stating " LOGON MESSAGE Unable to log you on beacause of an account restriction "

Anyone any ideas how to by pass this and get back into my pc... I really need it quickly for business data etc.

    Appreciate any assistance guys.

You can try logging in using the "hidden" Administrator account and if successful, undo the changes you made. When starting the computer, hit F8 to start in Safe Mode and on the login screen choose "Administrator" and hope that it is not password protected (or that you remember the password ... ;) ... ).

FYI, xp home edition will allow you to login as administrator in safe mode even if the account is password protected.

On XP pro too but people tend to forget the password ... ... I use a password that is so intricate that I had to write it down and stick it to the computer case ... ... !

I mean xp home edition will allow you to log in as the administrator in safe mode even if you don't know the administrator password. Pro won't let you get around this without using a third party tool like locksmith.

    tonman23,

I have never had the opportunity to log in the "Safe Mode way" on XP home and didn't know of that "weakness ". Most computers come preinstalled with no passwords for anything but if the owner installs XP home him/her self, is there a possibility to enter a password during setup? If there is, that is very close to pulling someones leg.

There is a utility that will boot using a floppy and can erase the Administrator password even in Xp PRO. It uses linux I think. I've used it a couple of times.

Now that I think of it though, it was on Win2k, not XP. Both are similar, though I don't recall if the documentation on it included WinXP.
