Lucallbackproxy

    For the last four days when I attempt to shut down the computer, the "illegal" sign comes on and cannot be removed. I found that the problem is "lucallbackproxy.exe," it is supposedly on program files, but I couldn't find it there, it is an application 98KB.

    The computer has to be closed down manually. Is there something I inadvertently changed, and if so can it be removed? I operate a W98 2nd edition.

    LuCallbackProxy.exe is Symantec (Norton) Live Update.

    As Tony points out, it is a Symantec LiveUpdate component. It comes with version 3.0.xxx. Try running a manual LiveUpdate session to see if there is any updates.

    I have done a manual update (again) just now and attempted to shut down. The problem persists - the scandisk begins to run. I cannot seem to find the spot in symantec to report this and hopefully get a cure.

    Apparently this symantec component updates itself every four hours (can't remember where I found that!) but I have tried shutting down at different times and only once was able to complete the shutdown. Ordinarily the liveupdate runs automatically where I set it, once a week. Have I inadvertently changed some setting?

    You will find Symantec LiveUpdate among the items in the control panel, where you can change the settings but as far as I know, nothing that could cause your problems. Check if it is set to "interactive mode" and "extended error correction" (or what it says on the opening tab - I don't run 3.0.xxx on this computer).

    I assume that you or someone else updated to 3.0.xxx recently and it is possible that the upgrade went wrong. Check in the Task Scheduler to see if there is a task pertaining to the old version of LU. It should be named Symantec NetDetect (NDETECT.EXE). If it is still there, do not remove it but try to install the most recent version of LU which can be downloaded from Updates and Patches

    After installing the latest version, check again in Task Scheduler for NDETECT.

    1. delete any Norton related shecduled tasks
    2. open Norton AV program.
    3. Options > disable auto updates > disable scheduled scans
    4. close Norton
    5. open again > options > turn on scheduled items (recreates scheduled tasks anew)

    I was using a computer earlier today, it is running Win98SE, Norton Internet Security 2003 and LiveUpdate 3.0.150. It behaved in a similar manner when I attempted to shut down after 5-10 minutes. A number of error messages appeared, one after the other (don't remember exactly what they said but all were the same). I had to click away a number of them and then the computer shut down.

    (A few weeks ago, when I installed the new LU engine, on a WinXP computer, I counted seven instances of LuCallbackProxy running in TaskManager when LiveUpdate was doing its thing. One instance for each installed Norton component, I guess.)

    I restarted the computer (the Win98SE today) and let it run for a while. I opened Norton Internet Security and the status for Norton Anti Virus was in red colour, calling my attention. I clicked to open NAV but nothing strange was to be found. I let the computer idle away for a while longer, went back and NAV was back to normal. The computer could be shut down "error free ".

    My conclusion is that the new LiveUpdate engine doesn't like being interrupted or terminated prematurely. The computer in question is connected to broadband (1 Mb/s) but on a phone line modem, it would take longer to finish an update session.

    How is your computer connected to the internet?

    Does it always happen or does it only happen after a short session, say 5-10 minutes?

    I guess that establishing a modem connection for a few minutes (e.g. checking mail) and then disconnecting, might produce the situation you describe but you say that it happens after a manual update session too.

    yes, as it should because the LU task-process remains in memory for a timed period after it has been used, just like rnapp does when closing a dialed net connection on win98.

    It's also possible that the LU process (tcp connection) is held up by a Time-Wait from the LU server. (can be verified by using sysinternals TCPView utility during & after running live update.)

    thanks for the insight!

    It is easier to follow what happens in WinXP through TaskManager and the running processes. I don't remember the name of the process but it has to do with "LU task scheduling ". Its memory usage increases when the computer is started and it checks for a connection. It remains high and if a connection is established, LU does its thing and the memory usage for that process drops back to a lower value. If a connection is not established, there is no problems shutting down.

    The issue seems to be Win98 (Win9X?) specific but LU must work differently than on WinXP (I think).

    Yes, xp handles memory and processes differently than 98. XP, & the software on it can have the memory it uses handled by the op sys whereas on win98 we had software that would stay resident (TSRs) and never have the memory freed up. Remember those? One had to resort to 3rd party apps to kill some processes on win98.

    Well, not really. My computer experience started in 2001 with WinME ... :rolleyes: ... which is said to have better memory management than Win98. However, if up more than 6-8 hours, no matter what, a restart was the cure for most issues, voluntarily or involuntarily. I find it strange that LuCallbackProxy, resident in memory (if that's what it is), would see itself as a running process objecting to be terminated.

    I wait for some feedback from marialouise to find out if I/we am/are on the right track.

    I have read with interest all the posts to date - in the meantime I have been talking to Symantec which confused me more than ever with complicated robotic-like instructions and never answering questions.

    I have W98SE and perhaps that is the problem - did I read that the 3.0.0 update was for newer computers than mine? Both problems still exist, and while I can keep clicking on the "illegal" message to shut down, I want to keep the LiveUpdate running which it has only done once in the several weeks of attempting.

    I am going to delete Norton schedule tasks as suggested above and see what happens.

    Well, I didn't suggest that, on the contrary. I suggested to reinstall the latest version of LiveUpdate!
