 When my computer starts up a command prompt window with a black background pops up entitled, "C:\WINNT\System32\cmd.exe ". I click on the "X" and it disappears. At best, this is just a nuisance but how can I eliminate it?

Download startup control panel and look for the cmd under the various tabs. You can just uncheck it and exit the program.

You try looking in your "Startup" folder?
there might be somethign in there that is making DOS run...
when the window shows, do you see any commands being executed?(hopefully not)
