    Hi All,

During a recent (out of state) visit to my daughters, she told me her Sony Windows98 SE had recently lost its sound. When I checked the Sound icon in the Control panel, it would not open. When I checked in Device Manager there were two icons for Sound that were yellow with a black exclamation marks. One had to do with Joystick and the other Audio. I removed them and rebooted. They came back (yellow and black) and still no sound. Since the system does not have a Joystick, I only noted the Yamaha AC-XG Audio Device.

After returning to my home, I received an e-mail with some further information. My daughter inserted different sound CDs which resulted in the following error messages (her words).
    Windows\System\ddraw.dll
    Windows\System\msjtick.drv
    Windows\System\vjoyd.vxd

I seem to recall the requirement for a dsound.dll file for the CD where the missing sound first was noted. This is my first encounter with a sound problem and I need some help.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I will pass the download site on to my daughter. I have also downloaded the setup file and will keep it until she has installed the Yamaha files. I want to pass on to her a step-by-step procedure so that her process goes as easily as possible.

    1. Download the Yamaha setup files.
    2. Remove the exixting Yamaha audio and joysick from Device Manager
    3. Open the downloaded setup file
    4. Follow the instructions for the installation of the Yamaha driver(s)
    5. Reboot the computer

I'm a little confused about the Joystick information but I'm assuming it is part of the Yamaha files. If you see something amiss in my instructions, please come back. We appreciate your helpful interest.

The joystick installation would be part of the sound card install. If you look at the sound card, you'll see there's a port on it that you can plug a joystick into. If you don't use a joystick it wouldn't be the end of the world if it didn't install correctly. It shouldn't affect the sound part of it.

Thank you for the additional information. That was something that I did not know.
