    Hello KPryd3,

Go into Add/Remove, tick "Show Updates" at the top of the page, scroll down to the MS updates section and uninstall KB908531.

This is an Explorer patch and seems to be causing a variety of problems.

    Regards - Charles

    thanks for help

thanks, charlesvard, for that information and help!
I've been searching for a solution for a similar problem all evening myself - I couldn't open 'File' in any of My Documents folders - it just hung and stopped responding. (All other functions and programs worked normally.)
And not surprisingly, it was all due to the one and only automatic update I allowed without checking. I've learned my lesson.

However, removing only the file you mentioned didn't solve my problem but removing all the updates from that same day (a few days ago) did.
So that patch (those patches) you mentioned caused the problem for me, too.
    Thanks!

    Hello Belge,

Glad to be of help :)

The MS advisory on this is that the patch KB908531 is a problem with HP software and scanners/cameras. Is that the case here?

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,

I had problems trying to save docs in Word 2002 to My Documents.

Also had problems when typing in web address in IE6. It would not go to the typed in web site.

    I uninstalled the update (MS06-015, 908531).

Microsoft covers these problems in their Article 918165.

    Thanks jslow,

I was curious as to how widespread this problem was because MS at first "blamed" HP software for this.

    Hi Charles,

I just discovered another problem with the recent Windows Security Updates (908531, 911562, 911567 & 912812).

I just found another problem with Word 2002 even though I uninstalled 908531 update. I can save documents to "My Documents" folder but if I try to save to another folder, Word 2002 freezes up & I get the "The program is not Responding ".
Then, of course, I lose my document because Word shuts down.
Apparently some of the other four Windows Security Updates (911562, 911567, 912812 & 908531) that I installed are also causing problems.

I may have to uninstall the other three Windows Security Updates to get my computer running correctly as it was before these updates.

We get enough problems. We don't need Microsoft creating more for us.

Try this if you don't want to uninstall the update!

    Hi Tonman23,

    Thanks for the reply.

I was also sent to kellys-korner where there is a Registry Edit download for this.

    I haven't tried it yet.
