I currently am running Win XP on NTFS but I cant get it to recognize my second drive. it is there in bios & device manager as well as disk management dut it does not show a drive letter & I cannot add one.

I was going to put Win98 on to see if it would recognize the drive so I can retrieve the data from it but f-disk shows my 80 GB drive as 10 GB. What will happen if I delete the partition & re-format fat 32. Will I be able to recognize an NTFS drive to remove the files on it?

Win98 will NOT see the NTFS drive.
Did your 2nd hdd work before in this comp ? If so what did you do last befor problem showed up?

[What will happen if I delete the partition & re-format fat 32] what partition ? Do not do it!

Are you talking about 2 different hdd's or 1 hdd with 2 partitions ?

    Ntfs vs Fat 32

    Hi,

This drive has been in the same computer for 2 & 1/2 years. I accidentally wiped it out last year & it has taken me a year to get the info back plus new documents not to mention pictures. it is a 30 GB drive & I was formatting an 80GB drive. is there a way to attach a word document showing some screenshots of what I am up against?

    Thanx

Yes you can but I do not know how to make screen shots or where to post. :( Hope someone else will tell us how.

Still not clear - remember we know not a think about your comp but what you post, if we make a guess it will likely be wrong. My guess would be the 80g hdd that you formated is the XP hdd and you reinstall XP ?
    1) what drive has the OS ?
    2) number of partitions on each hdd ?
IF you reinstall XP , search the web for "take+ownership+of+drive "

Contributing Members may post attachments - jpeg is one of the formats supported.

Otherwise post your jpegs on a site such as Image Shack and give the URL in your post.
Right clicking on the drive in Disk Management should allow you to assign a drive letter.

I just wanted to let you know so you can add this to your knowledge database.

I had previously had Norton system works 2006 installed on my hard drive before formatting & after I formatted the 2nd drive was being protected from access by norton go-back. I re-installed Norton system works & every thig came back on-line.

I just had to re-adjust the drive letters using disk management.

    Thanks for all the help

I hear you loud and clear on that one & that is why God created the computer so us dummies could create a file to store such info.
