I recently purchased a Dell E1505 Duo Core Laptop. Although it was much faster then my old laptop i decided to tweak the registry in an attempt to make it FASTER even though i now realize that was a dumb thing to do. As a result of my meddling in the regedit fields my laptop will not power down or restart from the windows menu. In order to shutdown i have to hold the power button, which is very annoying. Does anyone know what i have done? I'm not gettin any error messages when trying to shutdown, its just not doing anything at all. Futhermore am i damaging my laptop by manually pressing the power butoon to shutdown. I would appreciate some help guys as i do not know which regedit caused the problems i made numerous changes listed at this website http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1494&page=10

    Hello raysucio and welcome,

The most straightforward way to revert back to just prior to your problem is System Restore.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.

Words of warning from a VERY UNHAPPY user.

I learned a A LONG time ago to MAUNALLY check the System Restore BEFORE MESSING AROUND

I know that XP IS SUPPOSED to make a RP every day. BUT DO NOT COUNT ON IT !!!!.

I have not figured out why but I have checked some days and NO RP was made. So the better thing to do is to check and/or make one of your own before messing around.

I have also learned through experience is that once changes are made and prove to be OK it pays to shutdown and restart SR.

    Jacked up Registry

Thanks for the info guys but it seems that i also altered my sys restore at the same time that i jacked up my registry by making it smaller. is there anyway i can get a list of what a default reg should look like or is there a tool to do so? also i dont have a genuine xp cd so i cant reinstall and i would hate to do a full system clean up with the restore info because my laptop came with a ton a junkware and id have to uninstall all of it and start over!

    Hi ray,

Don't see any way around restoring the OEM cd, the registry contains thousands of entries and as far as I know, there isn't a "standard" copy one can download other than the one contained on a XP install disc. But hang on, perhaps someone knows of something like that.

If faced with the same situation, I would purchase a XP cd, in the long run would pay off because you would be able to repair the installation, re install, use it as a boot disc. You might try getting in touch with the OEM and see if they will sell you the XP disc at reduced cost.

Another way to handle this in the future is to drive image your installation and keep a master copy - in your case, after you have set up the system w/o the OEM stuff.

    Regards - Charles
