I have been trying to do a disk check, something I've done many times before, but for some reason the check is scheduled upon reboot but the message is that Windows is unable to open the volumn and that the disk check is finished. I tried it from start, run and it did the check but I was unable to do a repair or whatever by adding the extra letter (s) at the end. When I tried that it said it was a no good string or something like that.

I guess I need to know why it all of a sudden can't do it at start up. Why couldn't it open the volumn? Can anyone help me with this one? I've tried running it several time. It tries to check after each startup or reboot, but the same message.

I'm running Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2.

Older versions of Zone Alarm can cause the problem. Disable it from loading on startup and see if that fixes things.

If not, here's what Microsoft says to do in the KB article, Unable to run CHKDSK:

    RESOLUTION
1]Click Start, go to Run menu and type services.msc and click OK.
2]In the Services(Local) list scroll down to the respective service (i.e. virus checker or the disk monitor tool).
3]Right click on that particular service and select Properties.
4]Change the Startup type to disabled for any 3rd-party applications which might be causing the Chkdsk lock problem.
    5]Click OK/Apply.
    6]Reboot

    Check Disk

Thanks for replying so soon. I went to start, run, and typed services.msc. I could not find virus checker or disk monitor. I don't have zone alarm installed. I have Norton Internet Security. I don't think that would be doing it because I have had Norton for a long time and this just started a couple of weeks ago.

    sull48vg,

The attached jpg lists the 'parameters' that can be used with chkdsk. Proper syntax would be (for example): "chkdsk /r" (without the quotes and note the 'space' before the 'slash'. Using /f will repair most minor inconsistencies and using /r will repair all the things that /f takes care of and also checks the hard drive. These are probably the two most used chkdsk commands.
