Hey all, I have a strange problem with windows xp pro x64.

I have been running it for a while now and have had a few problems mainly blue screens, but the problem now is that some of windows had disappeared.
If I right click on my computer and got to properties some of the tabs have vanished from the window.

Also when I click on network connections nothing happens, and if I hover over wither the:
    Administrative Tools
    Network Connections
    Scanners And Cameras
    Scheduled Tasks
I get the windows error message beep.

I haven’t installed anything new and I use Avast Antivirus and Tiny Firewall, and the system is spyware free.
Does anyone have any idea what the crazy computer is doing?

    Thanks Lee

Your first image shows many tabs. Which one is missing?

Your second image doesn't show an error message?

    Am I missing something?

Suspect something is chipping away at windows. Suggest you do one or two online scans; find good ones by clicking Links in my signature and paging down. Probably no connection, but not sure why you use Tiny firewall when XP has one. That combined with the added protection provided by the 64-bit athlon and a hardware firewall in my DSL modem has sufficed for me.

Blue SODs must be rare in x64; have never seen one. Think you may be headed for a reinstall, but would try to find the cause first. Check out the 'stickies' at the top of the general security forum.

The virus scans came back fine.

I could re instal windows but then i would have to re activate it, which is fine but i can only activate this version one more time is there any way to keep the activation when re installing?

There isn't a limit on the number of time to activate unless you have a trial version. Might want to hang tight to see if anyone else can help..

Can you post the details on one of the blue screens? If necessary, go to start > my computer > properties > advanced tab > startup and recovery settings button > uncheck automatic restart. so it remains on your monitor.

One other thing would be to download hijackthis.exe and put it in its own folder, like c:\htj\ and run it to save a log and post it here so we can see what's running in the background.

It appears that you're doing graphics design and hosting a web site. You have good malware protection and a firewall.

You're way ahead of me in that I'm not familiar with a lot of the software you use. I hope someone more knowledgeable will take a look at you log.. I'll try to say a little from what strikes me. Your log indicates that a number of registry entries point to missing files. Those entries should be fixed by going to safe mode, checking their box in hijackthis, and selecting fix. But suggest you look it over and, for programs like Avast consider reinstalling them to be sure they're complete.

PS - The crashes (BSODs) are usually followed by scandisk, run behind the splash screen in XP. Often this results in damage to and loss of files, both parts of windows and parts of other software, and probably explains what's caused your trouble. The BSODs are often due to driver incompatabilities, so would like to see that solved before you reinstall everything.

I have used Hijackthis to try and fix the problems of the missing files.

I can now see the administrator tools menu and my network connections and the context mens have come back.

Another thing i have noticed, all the files which hitack this says are missing are there, like lass.exe its there, if it wasnt i wouldnt be able to log into my computer.

Also if i try to install any program which installs services the installers always fail like Diskeeper or O&O Defrag, when the installers get to the service install part they stop with errors like, "Unable to load resource dll "

The only conclusion I can draw is that HJT is seeing x64 as 2003.

You have a large number of files missing - checking and fixing in HJT will not restore those files - if they are on the computer they are not being seen by the registry, etc.

I think that you are looking at a repair install and a reload of some of the other programs too.

You should try to run System File Checker - I assume you burnt the download to a CD/DVD?

I have ran the System File Checker and all my menus have come back. But i have also recorded one of the blue screens

"Modification of system code or critical data structure was detected "

    NDIS.SYS

It doesnt seem to be getting any better :(

Well, look on the brightside - at least you have your menus back.:)

x64 is way outside my experience - did load it but there were not enough x64 drivers around to make it usable and I guess few on the Board use it.

NDIS.SYS is a NIC or network driver - are you sure that all your applications will run on x64 and that you have the appropriate x64 drivers?

I suggest you post a dump log as outlined here ....
