I'm willing to bet your new PC has a dual core processor. I had the same problem with the timeouts and ran across this link:

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Timeout_on_dual_core

It lists a few solutions but using the new dll solved the problem for me.

The kissing part made me squirm a little but it's the thought that counts! Be sure to report on your results so I can print out a Certificate of Achievement for myself...

Heh, that's what I live for; to make people squirm. :p Well I installed the newest Thunderbird that came out Friday, 1.5.0.2 and I read at the link you posted that the replacement dll file (which was supposed to be in 1.5) was part of the update. I set it up yesterday evening and have used it a number of times both in and out and so far so good. I think it is fixed now because one thing I can do that I could not before even if it was working for a period, is click the Get Mail button repetedly. Now I know you aren't supposed to do that, but the point is I could on every system except this one and now I can. Thanks for everyones help and especially Uffa, without whom it would have taken another 3 weeks to figure out :D
