i decided to put a password on my music,17 letters long.good password. too good, too long. and instead of passwording my music, its the whole computer! im using hal to get help.

what i see is a screen i never seen before it says to begin, click your user name. type you password and it only takes 12 0f the letters, which is not my password. then it says" after you log on, you can add or change accounts. just go to control panel and click user accounts." my only other opinion is turn off computer.

    help help help

Keep on typing - the max length of password is 127 characters
and I have just entered 17 characters in my login screen.

Once the cursor gets to the end of the window the dots keep coming, but of course you cannot see that until you use the backspace key and realise that more than 12 characters have been entered.

    Jan,
after logging in as Admin, which steps did you take to resolve the situation? Was it possible to remove the password, set by a different user?

    Locked out of your computer?

Are you using Windows XP? For the purpose of this message I am assuming that you are using XP.
    Here is what you try:
    1. Restart your computer in Safe Mode
1.1. While your computer is rebooting press [F8]
1.2. You should be brought to a monotone screen asking you how you want to start your computer. Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
1.3. If you were not brought to the monotone screen but instead booted directly back into Windows then try again, you did not press [F8] fast enough.
    2. Your logon screen should provide two accounts that you can log on to. One of them is administrator. Log onto the administrators account. Most people do not have a password installed on their administrator's account , if you are one of those people then in this case you are lucky but you should install one later. If you are prompted for a password here then you do not need to read any further, it will be of no help to you.
    3. Go to "Control Panel" - "User Accounts"
    4. Click "Change Account "
    5. Select your account, the account you normally log onto.
    6. You should be given a list of options you can change on your account. One of those options should be to delete the password. You will be given a warning that changing or deleting your password may lock you out of some of your personal files, unless you protected your "My Documents" folder you will probably be fine so go ahead and delete the password. If you protected any of your folders then changing or deleting the password might lock you out of them.
    7. Restart your computer normally.

Let me know if this helped.

christer, i am everything adm.and the dummy that got locked out of her computer. i just told it to get rid of that thing, and it did.

petec, thinking about without panic, i did put all 17 letters in and it gave me the 'forgot your password' thingie. at times i think adell is playing with me,letting me know just who is boss.:)

realjamesdean, dell and i used f8,got in safe mode,>control.user accts>adm and delete. no safe mode w/command prompt just safe mode.

arie, i keep a 3x5 file box with passwords etc, but i wouldnt mind making a password floppy, now the question is could i pop the floppy into a 98se machine would it read it?
