Upgrading from Windows ME to XP

Hello, I recently upgraded a computer of mine from ME to XP and for some reason, all of my programs/files from ME did not transfer over.

Whenever i restart my computer, I get an option whether to use Windows XP or Windows ME, so I know the ME is still on my computer. This is what I want to do:

1. Get my programs (most importantly antivirius software) from ME to my new XP platform.

2. When I restart my computer, I want it to default to XP and not give me the black screen which asks me the option to select XP or ME.


I did an upgrade on another computer of mine to XP and don't remember having this problem. Perhaps I over looked something.

I am using a Compaq Presario 5000. Thanks in advance for your help!

What you have created is a 'dual-boot' configuration. It allows you to boot to either operating system. When you tried to 'upgrade' WinMe with WinXP you got a *separate* installation of WinXP. (Hopefully it is not on the same partition as WinMe). Check in Windows Explorer and see if you can tell where WinXP is installed (what drive letter). Post back with this information and hopefully someone will be able to help straighten out the installation.
As far as moving your antivirus program (and others), these need to be re-installed, you just can't move them. Let's get your Windows problem fixed, then will take care of your other programs.

Thanks for the response! I went to windows explorer and did a search for Windows XP and I saw many of the components are saved in C. Is that what you mean? Is there another way to determine exactly where XP is saved?

Do you have more than one 'partition' on your hard drive? If so, how many? And what are the drive letters? If WinMe and WinXP are both installed on your C: drive... it would probably be best and start over and do a 'clean' install as Christer recommended.

Actually, I was wrong in my last post. My Windows XP is on my D: drive and ME is on my C: drive. How can I tell about the partitions?

I want XP to be on drive C: and completely wipe ME. My D: drive only has 2.7 GB while CD has 53GB of space. Also how can I save files from C: drive before wiping it and doing a clean install?

Partitions are specified by the drive letters... so C: is a partition, D: is a partition, etc. Any files you want to save (photos, music files, documents, downloads) can be burned to CD/DVD. Any programs will have to be re-installed. It would probably be best to wipe everything and start fresh. Here is a guide that will help you... XP Clean Install.
