Moving Folders with a USB Enclosure

I recently bought a new PC and I need to tranfer some picture from my old PC unto my new PC. I purchased a USB Enclosure kit. I had two hard drives in my old PC with all my pictures on one of them. Their is no operating system on this hard drive just all my pictures and a few games. I removed it and hooked it up to the Enclosure trying to get my pictures from. I made it a master drive per instructions. My new PC put it in my Computer in a folder called USB Storage. I click on the storage folder but I can't seem to find MY Pictures. Does anyone have any sugestions? Where do I go from here?

a couple of questions...

John,

I'm guessing by 'enclosure' you mean an external hard drive kit. Did it come with any drivers? The drive should show up like a 'regular' hard drive in Windows Explorer, complete with its own drive letter, not as a folder. What kind of kit was this? Have you checked the manufacturer's website for any related information?

Hello John,

Right click My Computer > Manage > in the left panel under Storage > Disk Management.

How does the USB drive show up?

As Mr B. mentioned, it should have a drive letter and show a graphic similiar to your C drive.

It an USB external enclousure, I pulled my slave driver from my old PC and hooked up to it. I made this a master drive per instructions. Their is no operating system on this drive. charlesvar- it shows up like this:

It is a 60 GB Maxtor drive. Now how do I get into it to get my Pictures off it? I thought just clicking on the drive like I would have on my old PC should have done it. All it says for instuctions for win XP is-Under Windows ME/2000/XP, the system can find and setup "USB Mass Storage Device " directly. It puts it in uner My Computer and it shows a folder named USB storage. When I right click on it it shows me a read me & also open with option. I tried left clicking and clicked on manage and USB storage folder pops up on the bottom of the screen (task Bar) Hopfully I can get these over to my new PC so I can burn them on CD.

At least Windows can 'see' the disk. Open Windows Explorer and see if it shows up in the left panel (folder tree). If there... click on it and see what shows up in the right panel. Hopefully you will see your files. Your drive shows up 'healthy' and working in the Management Console (that's a good thing) and shows approximately 2 gigs of used space. I run two external drives I put together from kits and they show up just like an internal hard drive in Windows. Give Windows Explorer a try and let us know what you find.

Thaks for all your help, I hope Im not bring a pain! I went to windows explorer and it was their. I clicked on it and it stil comes up the as it did in my Computer. I have 2 things to click on, one is the read me and the other is a-- Description: WDM Filter Driver

In the USB Storge Properties it says:

If I could open up my New PC and hook it enternaly I would but I would void the warranty. However I tried this on my sons PC with windows XP and it never showed up on his at all, I made the drive a slave. However the USB hookup should work , I thought it would show up as another drive but I guess not.

It did not give it a drive letter. Here's what I have, I hope this is what you need.

Layout- Partition Type- Basic File System- Fat Status- Healthy(EISA Configuration)
I know when you hook another drive enternaly it will give it a letter. When I added it to my old PC I had C & D . But being this is thru a USB it might not give it a letter but as a USB Device.

That's whats wrong, there should be a drive letter and right now can't think of a reason why windows wouldn't have assigned one.

Attached is my drive config - H & I are external drives via USB that were my old internal drives. MR B. I think did the same, the same as you.

Ok, for some more info, right click on the left area (disk 1) > properties and go thru the tabs > Policies - Volumes and see whats there.

Yeah, my drives show up the same as Charles'... they look like an internal hard drive and Windows gives them a drive letter.
John... is this drive plugged in to a USB hub or is it connected to a USB port on the computer? Sometimes a 'hub' can cause problems. Try connecting the drive to a USB port on the computer, make sure the power's on (if it has a switch) and then reboot the computer. Maybe this would help Windows see the drive.

Master - Slave - Single

Here are a list of possible causes:

Operating System: I noticed you did not mention what OS you are susing. If you are using Windows XP connecting a USB enclosure should not be a problem, but if you are using one of XP's predecessors like 95, 98, ME or 2000 then you will probably need to install the proper drivers.

Power Supply: Is your enclosure plugged in? Is the outlet working that it is plugged into? The power provided by the USB cable is not sufficient to power a hard drive so your enclosure must be plugged in to a working outlet.

Damaged Or Unconnected Cables: Double check that all the cables are connected properly to your hard drive. If either the power cable or ribbon cable are loose your drive will not appear properly. Your computer might see the enclosure but not the hard drive. Also check that the ribbon cable is not kinked, if it is then your hard drive will not appear to your computer.

Incorrect Jumper Setting: I could be wrong but I suspect your problem is in your jumper settings. You said you set it up as master as the instructions provided. First double check your jumper setting and make sure it is the correct setting for master, perhaps the diagram is reversed from the actual view. If your jumper setting for master was correct then I suspect the instructions to set it as master may have been incorrect. Usually when connecting a hard drive individually the setting should be for single not master. Try setting your jumper for single then see if you can see your files.

Defective Enclosure: If none of the above troubleshooting ideas worked then your enclosure might be defective, return it to the store where you purchased it and get a different brand.

Hi! I did all this and it says "All Hard drives connected to this enclousure must be set to Master Mode. I have Windows XP and it does see the external hard drive. When I plug the USB plug in it comes upin the lower right hand corner saying that has detected new hardware has been installed and working properly. In the Disk Mangement it shows up as Disk 1. My harddrive for my PC shows up as Disk 0. It even tells what brand the exteral hard drive is, it is a maxtor. It show up in MY Computer as a folder -USB mass storage. I right click on it and it ask you what program you would like to open it with. When I do that it says it cannot be opened with this Microsoft program. I will keep trying.

Hi Airplane,

In Disk Management, have you tried right clicking on the drive's graphic portion > "change drive letter and paths" and assigning a drive letter?
