Can someone help with a few bugs I have?
I decided to do a reformat and clean install of XP Home SP1a on the C: drive. The install seemed smooth with nothing unexpected happening. Two problems have shown up:

1: Device Manager is missing the "Monitor" tab, or line...(don't know what to call it) My display is a Viewsonic VA721 LCD, I've had it for a few months and it's been fine, The monitor was showing up before in Device Manager.
I do have the monitor up and running, it's using "Default Monitor settings" and I can set the resolution but not the refresh rate. I tried loading the drivers from the CD but the Hardware Wizard basically says everything is ok, how can I get the "Monitor" tab back in the list and get this recognized?
I just remembered something, my vid card is an dual output type, and one output doesn't work, so my LCD is connected to the other port on the card with an adapter, could this have something to do with it? Also in the Device Manager I have a yellow question mark "Unknown Device" sub is "VGA controller" ...

2: No internet connection- The motherboard has onboard 10/100 LAN,
I have cable hookup, and had a great connection before the reinstall, so something went wrong. In Device Manager I have the Ethernet device 1394 and it says all is working, but packets are at 0. If I run the Troubleshooter I can't get anything to change, it all "appears to be good ". I have reset the modem, ipconfig/renew, and nothing. The cable is hooked up and blinking on both ends. I called a friend who does the COX internet service and he had me check all the stuff they would do on the phone, and he said it appears the XP install might have gone wrong . So I reinstalled XP again, and still have the same problem.
I can try to work around this because I have an ethernet card and floppies from a long time ago, and they were on this computer before, even though I had onboard LAN I was using the card in the beginning. But I really would prefer the onboard hookup.

    Thanks
    Kent

Did you install your motherboard drivers?

Yes, after the reinstall of XP. Should they have been installed before the reinstall?

You should install the motherboard drivers right after installing the OS.

Try downloading the Viewsonic signed XP drivers from their site.

As for the connection problem have you tried to run the Internet Connection Wizard? I have found that rerunning this sometimes helps.

Thanks for the drivers link, at the Viewsonic site it said the Unsigned drivers are the best to use on all systems, so that's what I download at work on a floppy.

I did run the XP Internet Connection Wizard, it didn't change anything.

At least I have the drivers to try tonight when I get home.

Download, install and run Everest, which will tell you what your video card/chip is. Then google it and download driver to install.

I'll try this after I get an internet connection. My work pc doesn't have a cd burner and it's too big for a floppy...

Is that the only network connection you see? The 1394 connection is your firewire ports and has nothing to do with networking in the normal sense. There should be another network connection there for your onboard NIC. If it's not there it would appear that Windows isn't seeing it. Check in your bios to see if it's enabled or not. If not, enable it and then boot to Windows. Windows should find it and install drivers for it or at least offer you the chance to do so.

Zander, I didn't know 1394 was firewire.. BUT I have internet as I added the NIC card from my old pc, so for now I am on the web. I turned on the firewall right away. In the future I will try to figure out why my NIC isn't seen, and will open up the BIOS and look around again.

Whiskeyman, I also downloaded the drivers for the video card at work, and when I got home I found the driver CD for the vid card, so I loaded them and it made the Monitor tab in Device Manager show itself!!
So then I installed the Viewsonic drivers from the link you gave me. Weeeeeeeeee.........:D
So I am good for now, with a Monitor and web conection. I will now go for Windows Update and cross my fingers.

Sparrow, thanks for the Everest link, I'll check it out.

Thank you everyone for patiently helping me .
