I am running win-98. I have been using Netscape 4.2 as my browser. I recently downloaded Netscape 6.2. Now all of my jpg digital photos have been changed to "Mozilla Joint Photographic Experts Group Image File" and every time I open one I get an error message which reads "An illegal operation has been performed and this program will be shut down ". Sure enough about 5 minutes later my PC freezes up and I have to re-boot. What is the problem here? Can I disable the illegal operation program? Thanks, Scott

    Welcome to the Forum, srukke!

    Hi Scott,

I would get rid of 6.2 and install 7.0 PR1. Netscape 6.2.x is now obsolete, and there have been impressive improvements in 7.0 PR1.

To reassociate your JPG digital photo's:

    In Netscape Edit|Preference|Advanced|System
deselect the files (JPG) you do not want Netscape to handle.

You can also right click on one of your digital files and reassociate it with the program of choice.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

Thanks for the info I'll probably try 7.0. The strange thing on the digital photos is that when I right click there is no longer any choice to switch to other types. It's like this Mozilla took over and eliminated any other choice. I actually removed 6.2 and went back to 4.2 and I was then unable to open any photos. Help!

    O.K. Scott, remain calm...

Before you uninstalled Netscape 6.2, did you unassociate Netscape handling the JPG files in:
Edit|Preferences|Advanced|System? That should have done the trick.

Look at your Registered File Types:
    Open Windows Explorer
    Click on View|Folder Options|File Types

Tell me if you have these two entries listed:

Mozilla Graphics Interchange Format Image File
    Content Type (MIME): image/bmp
    Opens with: NETSCP6

Mozilla Joint Photographic Experts Group Image File
    Content Type (MIME): image/jpeg
    Opens with: NETSCP6

    Lemmeno!

    P.S. Try this also:
Locate one of the graphics files of the type you want to change. Click once on it to select it (so that it is highlighted), then hold down the [SHIFT] key while clicking once with the right mouse button. From the menu that pops up, choose "Open with... ". From that menu, locate the application you'd like to have open this file type from the list provided and highlight it. Then make sure that you've checked the box for "Always use this program to open this file" and click the [OK] button. Windows will now create a new file-type association for this graphics-file type and will remember it from now on. Do this for a JPG, a GIF, and a PNG file.

Yes both the files you listed are there. Only the Graphics Interchange opens with Netscape 6 though. The other one opens with Netscape only and has a different icon. The graphics file doesn't appear to let me change the icon. There is only the Netscape 6 to choose from. Thanks, Scott

Didn't answer your question about unassociating the files with the Netscape 6 when I deleted it. Didn't know I had to until it was gone. Had no idea it change the current settings and take over. That seems to be a Microsoft tactic. Thanks for the help, Scott

    Hi Scott,

Had no idea it change the current settings and take over. That seems to be a Microsoft tactic.

Well, not really, as that is a User Preference setting. When you made Netscape your default browser, all those settings could have been either enabled, or disabled. But that's water under the bridge.

There is a Netscape patch which you might try, which was originally for the old Netscape 6.0/6.01. It should give you back your JPG file association.
