Six months ago, I registered a shareware program with a registry-file "key" and had no problem. Now, when I double-click on another program's registration key (on my desktop), Windows gives me 6 messages. (I got a second key from the vendor, and it isn't accepted, either.) The messages are:
    (1) "Are you sure you want to add the information in C:\Documents to the registry?" (2) "Cannot import C:\Documents: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error." (3) "Are you sure you want to add the information in and to the registry?" (4) "Cannot import C:\Documents: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error." (5) "Are you sure you want to add the information in C:\Desktop to the registry?" (6) "Cannot import Settings\Rose\Desktop\key.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error. " (My logon name "Rose" has administrator's privileges.)

Then I rebooted into Safe Mode (became Administrator) & tried. No error message; instead the usual dialog confirmation that the file had been added. But, back in normal Windows, I opened the application & it still had "unregistered version "; opened Regedit, and the new key had not been added.

The "key.reg" is this (I shortened the string here):

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VertexLab\RotoBlox]
    "Key "= "0ei8BWnxThVZvHbSqHXZviK/iHYQgrNmQCw996TjMGWQ747J2RJdTmCtwI9EC/Zi9SgBqjPD8XnxeC9IgyIY4Ln+HRuVykvrMXLjI5d5NsjW7LzglE4cwCSsirQ2EXM= "

My computer (AMD3000 cpu, Gigabyte Mbrd, two Maxtor 80-GB HDD [NTFS] 75% free, 1 GB RAM; running XPpro SP2) is behaving normally; AVG, Spybot, Ad-aware, & SpywareBlaster (& Windows Firewall & MSUpdates) are all up-to-date and say nothing's wrong; I've run ChkDsk, don't need to defrag, use Registry1stAid & CCleaner every 4 days. I can edit 100MB audio & image files w no problems.

    Any ideas? T.I.A.

    Well, the key lies here:

"Are you sure you want to add the information in C:\Documents to the registry? "

    While it should prompt:

"Are you sure you want to add the information in C:\Documents and Settings\Rose\Desktop\key.reg to the registry? "

So check the file association for REG files:

    • From the Windows Explorer menu choose Tools > Folder Options
    • Select the File Types tab
    • Scroll down to the entry for REG & select it
    • Click the Advanced button, then select the Merge action, click Edit
    • In the Application used to perform action: it should list regedit.exe "%1 "
    • Use DDE should be checked

    Thanks very much, Arie!

I thought the "in C:\Documents" part of that first message wasn't right, but I didn't know how and why it wasn't, and what that meant. My game now has all its levels and no nag screens. Thank you.
