At the Black windows loading screen(with the grey loading bars) Im getting an error message saying something like

" System32/config.... corrupt or not found" and it doesnt boot up. I have a Windows 2000 upgrade CD and a windows 98 full installation CD, I also only have about 400mb of space left on the HD. Not sure what to do.

sorry for being very vague i havnt tryed booting it in a couple days.

Check the manual for keystroke to enter bios setup program at boot time (before windows starts to load).

Not unusual for the OS to show signs of wear after some years and you can correct all this by reinstalling it. Make sure you have the hardware drivers CD(s), and have backed up your data.
Would try this before buying another modem, although the modem mary be at fault (you'll find out after the reinstall:) ).
