I found a work around involving doing a repair, xp pro, after the first reboot and it's installing devices hit sfht & F10 and it opens a command prompt...enter NUSRMGR.CPL and it takes you to the user control panel where you can chg it. so I did....Well now it's loading super slow, Norton takes forever, and when it's finally done...no mouse....have one b4 windows settings go into effect....and can see the mouseovers when I pass over things, but the pointer doesnt budge....It also wanted to reinstall that onboard graphix drvr I was havin trub with. Never got a chance to get into bios to set it off. I'm at a loss of ideas here. Any help would be appreciated....& I know I can reformat, but as always...would rather not lose EVERYTHING....
Some one suggested I hook up the hard drive to this puter and transfer stuff....This is a Optiplex Gx 150, the other a Dimension 2400, both Maxtors 1 90gb this 1 60gb, There's no place for the drive on the Dimension, but do see where another would fit under the one in the optiplex, although it doesnt look large enough for the bigger drive. Don't I have tomake sure the MB can support 2 HD's? or is this common pratice?

Changing hard drives isn't going to help this unless the original drive is acting up.

As soon as you turn on the pc start hitting F2 to get into the bios.

Most all computers will support 2 hard disks if use a ribbon cable that can connect 2 drives. The drive does not have to be mounted in the case, it can hang freely or sideways or flat or any old way, so long as it is connected and stays connected. Just hook up the drive & keep the case opened and the drive connected, copy the data, burn the data to dvd or cdr, put the drive back where it came freom & and move on.

The drive on the Dimension is the one acting up. I wanna put them both on the optiplex I think. Except it doesn't hold much memory. Well it will hold 512 but I only have a 128 and 256 in there. But yes it does have the cables that say hd1 hd2. And I should set the jumpers to slave on the dimension...correct? I need a diagram, guess I'll google.
What about the CD? Will I need to do anything to it, as it is set to slave right now I believe. There is also a notice that comes up at boot, saying secondary disk not found, hit F1 to continue...on the optiplex. This started when I installed the new cd drive. Which is working fine. The optiplex is 2000, dimension xp pro

    On the optiples:
    1. leave the existing hd as it is, it is probably set as master or single.
    2. using the same ribbon cable as that existing hd, connect the drive from the dimension, and set the existing drive's jumper as master and the newly added drive as slave.
    3. the cdrom should be on a second cable set as master or cable select (cs).

The above will work provided your motherboard has 2 IDE controllers (supportts connecting 2 ribbon cables).

If the optiplex supports 512 MB ram (256 each slot) then yank the ram from the dimension and add it to the optiplex. This will work IF both systems use the same kind of ram. You will have to check the specific model optiplex spec at the dell site or the user manual to see (1) how much ram the mb supports, (2) the type of ram it uses & (3) the max ram that can be used in each slot. The 512 stick from the dimension may not work in the optiplex because the optiplex may only support 256 max in each slot. Check the manual.
