NetGear wireless and Swapfile ...

Say ...was not 100% sure where to ask this, but since it only happens while using my new wireless card, I suspect this is the correct forum...

Under Win 98se ...Old AMD K6 350 ...256 meg ram ...
Recently added a NetGear Wg311v3 wireless lan card ...the Router it access's is a NetGear WGR614 ...

Everything works ducky ...the problem is, my swapfile size grows alarmingly fast ....after 2 hours of internet access, I heard my hard drive rattle...looked and saw that the swap file had grown from 45meg to about a gig and a half...Internet exlorer cache was only 19 meg ...first thought was drivers, got the latest and the problem worsens ...if I limit the swapfile size, I start getting bizzare errors....anybody have a clue?

by the way, disable the lan and the problem disappears ...

But 1.5 gig? Abnormal.

I have the same system (well almost) but it uses only 500 MB of swap file, even while playing games. Something is wrong somewhere. Check your computer for spyware etc.

rsinfo....have gone over this thing with a fine tooth comb, seems to be a whole lot of polling going on, and as I said before, only have to disable the Lan card to see perfectly normal operation. The firewall is on and upto date....confusing, very confusing ...

Try changing the wireless LAN card.

 

sounds like it could be a memory leak in the drivers for the wireless card - you might try seeing if there are any newer drivers on the manufacturer's website

 

Phil ...that is one angle I had not considered, trouble is, the new drivers (only one update since original release) are causing all kinds of problems with dropped connections ...the message board at their website has several posts complaining of exactly the trouble I had with the new drivers ...

It still bothers me about all the polling going on, but one crisis at a time. Unless I have a neighbor around here trying to get a free connection....

You could just ask someone you know to loan you a card for a day or two for testing.

 

Finally ...

Well guys, I would not have believed it, but Netgears silly configuration utility was the culprit...disabled that and the swapfile shrank back from 259 meg to 70 meg and seems content to linger there ...(the card works fine without it, by the way...)

Also, the updated version causes all kinds of dropped connection issues, so I'll be content with the status quo for the time being...
