hi all - i've just bought a laptop which came with xp pro on cd, my old desktop is running xp home.

    Questions:

Do I need to unistall home before installing pro?

    AND

Is it worth doing, on the basis of "if it ain't broke don't fix it "?

    Many thanks in advance.

If I understand you correctly you want to install the copy of XP Pro which came with your laptop on your desktop?

You cannot do this - you can only install XP on a single computer, doesn't make any difference if it is Home or Pro. The install will go fine, but you will be unable to activate it. Your copy of XP on the laptop is 'registered' with the CD. If you removed XP from your laptop you would then be entitled to install it on another computer, but you would need to convince Microsoft that you were acting legally.

If the copy of XP which came with your laptop is OEM it is unlikely to install on any other computer with different hardware as it is 'watermarked' to your laptop hardware.

Thanks for the information and advice, I was totally unaware of what appear to be the legal issues.

    Good 'ere innit.
