I am currently building a Gigabyte GA K8N Pro SLI and and a new AMD Athon 64 3000+. I'll get a stronger CPU some other time, but for now it'll have to do. -$ you understand. This is a repair on an existing system... rest of system will be reused... including the Win XP on my SATA drive.

So after finding out that the nvidia nforce4 sli contoller will indeed run my Raptor WD360 (was a question for a bit.. but GB says it will and they tested it on the SATA 3 ... its a SATA drive.)

Ok. so now thats thats determined I'm going to assemble it tonight.

Q1. My first question is how do I teach my current Win XP OS installation that its now working with a different mb/cpu combo. This Raptor will be my main drive and carries the OS. I heard from one tech that I'll need to do a "repair" ??? from the orginal CDrom (I assume tyhat is an option on it) and it will reset my windows XP for this new configuration?

Forgive my ignorance. Only got XP a few months ago. Prior to that was 98SE... so I have a lot of catching up to do. Still need this new machine back in operation tonight though if I can.

Q2. Although I will have an old IDE 33 40pin connected to the secondary IDE to copy (in fat 32) certian critical files so when/if this happens again. I can move that drive to one of my old backup machines (non SATA or NTFS formatted, Win 98 machines. Big problem this week loosing access to those files... yea... I know.) It may or may not have an old 98 windows on it, haven't been on it in years and truthfully I do not remember what is on that old one. Might just reformat it just because of that. really don't want to introduce and antique viruses. But I do not what it to be boot. Only the SATA Raptor. How do I set that up?.

I know some of you know this stuff like the back of your hand. I know enough to be dangerous. Don't assume I know anything... some things I do know after twenty years of PCs, but a lot of my knowledge is obsolete and I may not know what you may assume I do.

    Thanks.

    Hi Dave

Coincidentally I have the GA-K8N-SLI with an AMD 64 3500+ aboard plus 2 x SATA drives (not in RAID) and a PATA (eide) drive. XP and Vista are on a SATA drive in dual boot.

    First read ....

How to replace the motherboard on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000

Then read p75 of the motherboard manual - installing the RAID drivers. I know that you are not running RAID, neither am I, but you need to install the SATA controller drivers. Make the floppy as instructed.

When you boot from your Windows CD to make a repair install as detailed in the MS KB article above and see the blue screen with Windows Setup in the top left hand corner, note the message along the bottom of the screen re. third party drivers and hit F6. Further down the line you will be asked to insert the floppy disk. Just follow the instructions on the screen.

Unhitch the EIDE drive while you make the repair install - when the repair is complete connect the drive up again - it will just be seen as a drive and you can format it or whatever.

Oh - and please note the time difference between USA/UK if you come back with any queries.

Thanks, I'll read up on that. I figured there was going to be new driver setups... but hadn't got that far, and was somewhat confused when I built it the first time.

How do you like your G/b - Athlon 64 setup?.

For now I bought a 128 BFG Gforce 6600 PCI-e 16x... I'll mate it with another some time down the road... likely about the time I upgrade the CPU to a X2 4800 or so. But right now I'm concentrating on getting a decent mb, ram, drive base and expand from there.

Right now I need data thats on the SATA... need it NOW! Aghh... and I knew better too.

BTW... I like your "usually not enough" description... I can definately relate to that!

    Thanks again.
    Dave

After years of using Asus boards I decided to give Gigabyte a tryout - works well enough, no specific problems to date (built Jan) I think the top manufacturers are that close these days the decisions are made on the finer detail. For example I need a serial port for my old tablet and preferably a second for a dialup modem which I use only on a specific site. Used a Matrox G550 with dual monitors for years for Photoshop but the 32 Mb was not enough for all versions of Vista which I am notionally beta testing so replaced that with an nVidia 256 Mb GeForce 6600 PCI-e. Not a gamer so SLI was not important at all, but why buy 'outdated' kit when everything moves forward so fast :)

BTW - don't forget to install the chipset drivers from the mobo CD once Windows is up and running.

    First run coming up

Thanks PeteC, youve been a blessing.

Got the "how to" and printed it.

Going to move this machine from its "hole" shortly. Hook up the new one and do its first power up.

Installed the mb and everything except the SATA. First run will be with a diagnostics/burn in from the floppy. Installation went well, but do need to tell gb/amd about a misprint in their instructions for the CPU... picture is right but wording is wrong.

    Rest went as expected.

Will be off line a while. Later. Will let you know how first run went.
