I tried 'Search' function but it is not working.Sorry, if this was posted before by someone else.

I am having a problem with Internet. Whenever I open the browser. I get the error message ' the page cannot be displayed'. This started about 2-3 weeks ago and it has worsened now - I cannot connect to Internet at all. Now the onlytime I can get online is if I switch the power off on my powerstrip to which my PC,cable modem, router are all connected and then switch it on. Even then, after 1 or 2 links it stops connecting.

My email (ISP-Charter) works fine - can download with no problem. My VOIP phone works fine.
I tried all the suggestions listed in the microsoft article (checking connections, powering off modem and router, checking 3rd party software conflicts, winsock repair ,registering dll files (though 1 or 2 files loaded but no entrypoint found) etc and even a system restore to a month before. All with no success.
The problem exists with both IE and Firefox. I connected the PC directly to the cable modem (bypassing the router)- still the same. I also tried connecting a laptop directly to the modem but still does not work.

The problem might have started after I downloaded and installed MS Live One care beta. It froze my system, so i removed it. I also shut down Zone alarm and even removed it.
MY host PC (Windows XP) is connected to Motorola cable modem (SB5100)- a year old , thru a netgear wireless router. I have AVG antivirus, spybot S&D, Adaware, MS antispyware. I have a wireless network and obviously, none of my client PCs can connect.

    Any suggestions.

    Hi Ajay,
We previously had a home network set up with Windows XP Home and Windows 98SE Computers. We had Cable with wired Ethernet connections.
We had a Linksys cable modem & a D-Link router.

We had the WinXp Home computer set up as the Main (host) computer.
We started having problems with our connections to IE, OE & AIM disconnecting. If we tried to re-connect we couldn't. If we re-booted the WinXP computer, we would reconnect for about 5 or 10 minutes and then disconnect again.
Our cable company had us by pass the router and then we could connect,,, so they blamed the problem on the router.
We contacted D-Link and they finally had us change from "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" to "Use the following IP Address ". In other words they gave us an IP Address to enter manually.
This solved our problem at that time.

You may want to check with your Modem or Router manufacturer to get their input.

There are two Microsoft Knowledgebase articles ( 175722 & 241344 ) that covers some of these problems.

    Good luck.

    Hi,
When I encountered the same error message as you have, I called tech support and they felt the problem was with the NIC Card..The computer had one of those built in Ethernet cable connection that I have never been to fond of and after I installed a NIC Card, there has been no further problems to the best of my knowledge...

P.S...You made no mention of whether or not with everything hooked up normally what your IP address was ??? In my case it was what was always there which was what all computers show when a router is also part of the set up...

I read through this post and I see several mentions of one PC being the Host which I take to mean that SHARING is being used.

I suggest making sure that each PC has its own NiC and connected directly to a Router and the Router to the Modem an do away with sharing the Internet connection.

You can still share things between machines if you wish.

I have 3 PCs connected to a Router but I can share if I wish to. But I do not need to as each machine is pretty much the same contents and we play games between them using IP addresses.

In fact my Wife just challanged me to game of Cribbage. Challange Accepted.

    Edit & add

I have everything set on auto. The machine addresses are asigned when the machine is turned on.

I had almost the same problem except no router. It lasted almost a year disconnecting two or three times a day. It was the power bar.
connect your cable modem direct to the wall outlet and see if that will help.
