I recently upgraded my computer and I am using my old hard drive as an additional drive. (letter F). I was trying to import my IE favorites from my old drive to my new one but it will not allow me to access the old folder. The main folder that contains the info is under an old account that I had a password to. Ex. An old administrative account.
Any idea's how I can access that folder? TIA. OS- XP Pro

    FTP Client Is The Key

... I often use my WS_FTP Pro software to peek inside locked folders on a computer. Why that works is for a real geek to explain. I first noticed that it works is when I installed the WS_FTP client software on a HP with the recovery software stored on a locked partition (cheapskates). I browsed to the locked partition and was able to access the files easily. Try it - you'll like it. ... :)

I had the same problem recently. I found 2 possible workarounds. The easier one is to use a nice shareware tool; fully functional for a limited time, that is called "MSTotal Access" ; cf. http://www.mstsoftware.com/c_mst_totalaccessdisk.aspx

You should be able to access the files and store them somewhere else, for instance on a FAT32 device where this problem won't reappear (seems linked to NTFS filesystem).

The second one is to connect your HDD to a XP Pro system, you might be able to set authorization to the folder so that you can read it afterwards.

If this refers to a work around for XP Home (no security tab available) you can access the security tab in Home by booting to safe mode. Should be available then.

Or you can add the security tab to XP home so it appears in normal mode:

Thank you to you and Zander for showing how to add this feature to XP home which can really be useful sometimes !
