I have to rebuild a domain controller on a 2000 network, fitting a new set of larger scsi disks into what is a tired machine that needs refreshing.

The machine was the first DC on the network and is also one of two DNS servers and one of two DHCP servers.

There is a wealth of information on the net about restoring sysvol and AD after a crash but I couldn't find anything that gives a simple step by step account of the best way to approach the task.

Should I demote and then rebuild? or can I just rebuild and replicate?

    any advice gratefully received.

    Grunty,

You should deffinately demote the dc before rebuilding it. If it was the first DC you built, it is also the PDC emulator and the Schema Master, while the second DC has copies and can be made to work, it will save you alot of trouble if you demote first. Then check all of the rolls on DC2 and make sure everything is there.

Thanks for the reply. I found a microsoft article on how to transfer FSMO roles (here).

After that it will be a case of moving the DHCP scope to another machine, removing DNS, backing up a couple of shared folders and then demoting, removing from the domain.

Rebuilding will just be the reverse of the above.

    Thanks for your help
