I have 2 desktops and 1 laptop in my home network. I open up My Network Places from my daughters desktop and can see ALL computers' folders that are shared. I do the same form my desktop and wife's laptop and can only see laptop and my desktop chared folders. Workgroup computers shows all 3 but I get a message saying that I don't have permissions to open her computer from there.

Up until about q couple weeks ago, everything was fine and had no problems what so ever with this. I am not sure if maybe she installed something on the computer that messed it up. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Has your daughter changed her password or installed some security software?

    Hi LaPaglia6399.
First off, what OS are u running on them? Have you checked the computer and made sure file sharing is still on? Also check the permissions. Try opening it from somwhere else than My Network Places, maybe Windows Explorer.

Hi JC, I am running XP Pro SP2 pn all computers. I am not sure how to check permissions and it won't open up from anywhere else that I have tried. She is constantly going to all kinds of music web sites and I am pretty sure that she clicks on "OK" whenever pop ups come up from that site. Whatever she has done with it is effecting the Active X as well because I can't run my Norton virus scan. I am trying to avoid having to re-format because she is a 15 y/o that can't live without her music that she has on the computer and I was going to copy it to my computer so that I can re-format it and then transfer it back and that is what brought me to this predicament I am in now.

    Thanks...
    Ernie

It might be easier in the long run to hitch up your daughter's hard drive to your computer as a temporary slave, copy what she needs to your hard drive and then refit the drive in her computer and reformat, etc. Sort out the network with a fresh install on her drive and then transfer the data back.

There are some splendid devices around to help with this. This is an example of one available here in the UK. Here's a similar device States side of the pond.

Plug one end into your hard drive (and connect power supply), and the other into your USB port. The hard drive appears as a drive on your PC. You only have to open the case for your daughter's PC to get the drive out! Then reinstall it. No messing with jumpers and setting up master/slave arrangements.
