Hey guys, I am having a serious problem regarding my DVD-ROM drive, it just doesn't work! It has not worked for some time, however, I really didn't care as I didn't use it often. I have a CD-RW/CD-ROM drive as well, which I now have to use to read all of my discs, and it works fine for everything but, of course, DVDs. I now have been trying to look into why the DVD ROM drive is not working and can't figure it out.

    Here is the drive's info:

    SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-612

    Device Type: DVD/CD-ROM drive
    Manufacturer: (Standard CD-ROM drives)
    Location: Location 0 (0)

The device status is: Working Properly

I am using XP SP2 on a Dell PC

Also, I have tried to use the troubleshooter and update the driver and nothing seems to work. Whenever I enter a disc and try to open the D: drive, which is where this DVD-ROM is assigned, I get the "Please Insert a disk" message. Which shows something is not communicating properly.

Hopefully someone can help me out, this is getting really frustrating. Thank you in advance!

Not necessarily :) - these messages are not always 100% correct. :)

Have you done the usual troubleshooting? ....

Uninstall the drive through Device Manager and reboot.

Open up the case and reseat the ribbon cable - power cable is likely to be OK as the drive is recognised.

    Try another ribbon cable.

It is always possible that the drive has failed in that it is not detecting the DVD/CD when inserted.

Try blowing a jet of canned air into the drive through the door to dislodge any dust which may be present.

If you have the opportunity check out the drive on another computer.

Well first, thank you for the great responses! I am a little overwhelmed at the task at hand, but I think I can manage it. Do you have any reference material you could direct me to? I have never had to open the cpu to mess with an actual drive, I have upgraded memory, thats about it. Also, I am not sure have to check the master/slave settings???

The one thing I did do in regards to troubleshooting the DVD-ROM drive, I tried to uninstall and then reboot windows, and it did not work. It reloaded the driver but still does not recognize a disc, oh well, I guess it is on to the more in depth trouble shooting.

I do have a laptop so I can take this cpu apart and stay online if someone could help me through this process. I would greatly appreciate any help in conquering this next task of taking the cpu apart and adjusting the drive itself.

    Thanks!!!!!!

Also, I would like to add....For some reason, I believe this problem began happening when I deleted Easy CD creator which came with my Dell cpu. Perhaps this had a hand in messing up the drive, or maybe I deleted somethign critical??

Is there any way for me to checK?

    Thanks,
    Justin

It isnt easycd creator. The DVD drive is part of windows, not some third-party software.

This is possible although you say that your other drive is working - see this article from Microsoft Knowledge Base ....

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
As this involves editing the registry follow the instructions here for Backing up the Registry before you make any changes.

If you are not happy delving into the Registry - stay out of it :)

This statement is inaccurate - removing EasyCD creator can give rise to problems of CD-ROM, DVD-ROM access - see my post above.

Well I have yet to actualy take the computer apart, for some reason I think I did something really stupid a few years back and deleted some crucial files.

One thing that I know I deleted was something that is required to launch search companion. I can not use the Windows "Search" feature since deleting some file. Whenever I attempt to search it says "A file is missing that is required to launch search companion ". However, this is off topic, back to on topic....

If I hapened to delete a crucial file from Adaptec or Windows that is required to use the DVD-ROM drive how can I go about getting it back? I am inclined to load Adaptec back on my computer, but it is only for Windows 95-WindowsME, and I currently run XP so it is not compatible. Should I try to reload windows to fix my problems?

I would like to try to exhaust all other options before taking computer apart.

    Thanks!

    Justin
