How does one do a "search" with XP?

I guess I still remember DOS too well.

When one wanted to locate certain "file types "
we just did a search on *.exe ", *.jpg" or *.doc" etc.

We created a document using Word Pad and saved it.
Now we want to do a general search on the "file extension ".

However viewing files using Windows Explorer we discover the "real file type" is no longer used. Just a lot of words.

Instead the "Type" is shown as:

    Wave Sound
    Midi Sequence
    Jpeg Image
    Rich Text Document
    Windows Media Player
    Windows Media Player/Vedio File
    Microsoft Word Document

    And on and on.

Type in (*.Microsoft Word Document) in the search box and you get
nothing ! But there are lots of them stored under a file extension of some sort.

What happened to the "file Extension" ?

I'm sure those "Wave Sound" files are stored as file type ".WAV ". !

How can we do a search when file type information is just words ?
Is there a table of such terms that converts them to the actual
"file extension" they are stored under ?

XP done got me confused - search is a joke !

    Maybe this:

    Start/Settings/Control Panel/Folder Options/ "View" Tab.

Scroll down to "Hide extensions for known file types" and deselect the check box.

While you are there you can check other boxes to suit your fancy....

  3. to hide this advert.

XP hides file extensions by default. To change that, in My Computer (or any folder), go to Tools>Folder Options>View tab. Uncheck "Hide extensions of known file types." You might want to uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and check "Show hidden files and folders" while you're there. Click OK and try the searches again.

In the Search window, click on "More advanced options" in the left-hand pane and see if there's anything there you want to enable.

Are you typing *.doc or .doc "? I just type .doc and it finds all of my Word documents.
