I'm running Win XP Home Edition.

Several months ago, I downloaded the newest version of Windows Media Player. After installing it, my log-in procedure changed. Previously, when I booted the computer, I would end up on my desktop. Now I am presented with the "select user" screen. I am the only user and I don't want the added step of having to click the avatar to log in.

How can I return to the original means of logging in?

    Thanks for any guidance...

Take a look at this link: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/tips/knox2.mspx

This procedure should let you logon automatically.

Go into Control Panel and select user accounts. There is a button that says "Change the way users log on ". Click that and in the dialog that appears, uncheck the "Display Welcome Screen "

OK - tried this. It tried to log me on as the admin and I got an "unable to log you on" message. When I switched the user name to "assigned" to me, I was in. So there still was a log on.

I have 4 accounts, turns out. Administrator, ASPNET (which I didn't create...) Guest, and the owner account, timm. I bought this computer "open box" and didn't set it up originally. Admin and timm are set up w/admin privileges; aspnet is set with Users privileges, and guest with guest privileges. Which, if any, of these accounts can I safely disable? Or am I just setting myself up for a lot of hassle because I don't want to click a button on log in?

Hi, JC. I tried this; all it did was change the log in from the Welcome screen to the task manager-looking log in box.

OK, whats happening is the computer does not know which account that u want to log on. You need to delete all those other accounts which u dont need. (you cannot delete the guest account but u can disable it)

The ASPNET user is created automatically when you install .Net.
What I have done to get around this is install TweakUI from Microsoft and go to Logon. Then uncheck Aspnet and all users except the one you want to logon on to and you will just go to that user.
    Get TweakUi here:

Sorry my advice didn't work. You should be able to do this, since you were able to do it before. Techs and JDC071391 both have good ideas; please let us know what happens.

    Take care,

    Cliff

There is NO need to delete any accounts. You can use Microsoft's TweakUI (or my Tweaking Toolbox XP) to log automatically into a user account of your choice.

Hello Cliff and everyone...I did download and install TweakUI, removed the additional account, and now I'm logging in by going right to my account without having to select my (lone) avatar.

Thanks to everyone for the help!

Open Tweakui > Logon > Autologon.

If that doesn't work for you ....

Start > Run > type in control userpasswords2 > OK

In the window which opens highlight your account and uncheck 'Users must ....' and follow the prompts and OK out.
