Hey, i've spent the last 2 days straight searching these forums and more, trying to fix my Limited or no Connectivity error (not sp2 related).

I have tried every fix i've come across, none have worked. I'm using a netgear wireless router.

I just recently tried ipconfig /release, which worked. I then typed ipconfig/renew, and it comes up with, pretty much

"required service provider cannot be loaded or initialized ".

    and sometimes

"operation was attempted on something that is not a socket. "

The command works on this computer, the only other one in the network, though. Please help, ive been trying to fix this for a ew days, i'm getting very very frustrated, and discouraged.

(note: this has happened in the past, but then a quick restart of the router fixed it perfectly, ive done that many times now to no avail.)

Start by giving a static IP address to the PC & pinging the router. If you can ping, the basic connectivity is ok otherwise you may have to repair the TCP/IP on your computer. Also check if DHCP Client service is running on your PC or not (it should be Automatic & Started).

How do I find what ip address to set? I sound really dumb here, never worked with networks or ip's in all my years of screwing around with computers.

    a few questions:

What version of windows is the other computer running?

How are you connecting the other computer to the router, wired or wireless?

what do you see when you run "ipconfig -all" on both machines?

    - post the answers and I might have some things you can try

Have a look at the documentation that came with the router. That will tell you the IP address of the router. It is usually either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. You then have to choose IP addresses that will communicate with the router's address. You can use this tool:

    http://www.nicholshayes.co.uk/Node2Node.html

to play around with IP addresses. Put the routers IP address and mask (usually 255.255.255.0) in as PC02, and enter your test IP address as PC01.

When you have an address that passes this test, set that in you PC, putting the router's IP address as the default gateway address.

You can test the gateway settings with this tool:

    http://www.nicholshayes.co.uk/GatewayNode2Node.html

Put your PC's address with gateway setting as PC01, and the router's address as PC02 (leave the gateway blank for PC02). If all is well you should get a result like this:

    Code:
    Computer 1
    IP address is 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0
    Subnet is 192.168.0.0
    Subnet Broadcast address is 192.168.0.255
    Node Number is 0.0.0.2

    Computer 2
    IP address is 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0
    Subnet is 192.168.0.0
    Subnet Broadcast address is 192.168.0.255
    Node Number is 0.0.0.1

Both computers belong to the same subnet

The Nodes Numbers are different, which is correct.

    The subnet masks match

Computer 1's route out of the network is via 192.168.0.1.
Computer 1's Gateway is Computer 2. For this arrangement to work either:
Internet Connection Sharing; Packet forwarding; or a Proxy/Firwall system
must be working on Computer 2, and Computer 2 must have access out of
the network and/or connection to the internet.
