The DVD-CD Rom that came with my Presario vibrated terribly and I replaced it this morning. I was surprised NOT to see an audio cable going from the motherboard, pins marked "CD in ", to the audio pins on the drive?? An audio cable was supplied with the new drive so I hooked it up, but am not sure if I should have. The CD-R drive also does not have an audio cable and is capable of playing a music CD!
What is going on here? Should I disconnect the audio cable since the devices seem to work without it?
    Confused!

You only need the audio cable for analogue audio - for digital audio the cable is not required.

If you look in Device Manager and the properties of the DVD-CDROM drive (Properties tab) you should find that 'Enable digital audio .....' is checked.

Great! So how does one get analogue audio? Does it matter that I hooked up the wire?

    That's a good question :D

My take on that would be that you connect up the cable - the non drive end goes either to your sound card or to a socket on the motherboard if you have an onboard sound chip and then go into Device Manager and uncheck the box under the drive properties to Enable digital audio thereby disabling it.

I had already hooked up the wire from the motherboard to the back of the drive. But I think you are correct in that disabling the digital audio will then produce the analogue audio.
Before this thread I didn't even realize there was digital audio that went through the 40 wire cable. All of my previous computers always had a sound card with a wire to the drive. I also did not see the word "digital ", and simply thought it was for audio, assuming it was analogue.
    Thanks for all your help.
