    Hi,
Is there anyway to Repair or Reinstall Services in "Services.msc" in the event that some of the services got corrupted.

We are having a problem starting the "MS Software Shadow Copy" service. We keep getting "Error 1053: The Service did not respond to the Start or Control request in a timely manner ".

We tried the resolution in Microsoft's Article ID: 839174 which was to Install the latest Service Pack for the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 but this didn't solve the problem.

We also had a suggestion to Disable APC but we couldn't find any APC on our computer to disable.

We are having this problem on an IBM NetVista computer running Windows XP Home, SP2.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

jslow--As you probably have found, TheElderGeek makes the following recommendation
    http://www.theeldergeek.com/ms_software_shadow_copy_provider.htm
However, you seem to use this service, so I doubt you will want to Disable.
Note that this service has a dependency on another Service, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), so you should check that this is not disabled. You need RPC to enable VSC to run.

The executable for Volume Shadow Copy is C:\WINDOWS\System32\vssvc.exe, so that is the file you would have to restore if your copy is corrupt. Best way to do that is Start|Run|type sfc /scannow|OK.

    Hi Charles,
    Thanks for the reply.

    Since I don't have a Windows XP Home CD, I guess I can't do a repair.

I have an IBM Recovery Partition and also Recovery Disks for this computer but no separate Windows XP CD.

    Thanks

Hi Jim. Thanks for the reply.

I have already tried sfc /scannow but it didn't solve the problem.

I have Ghost 10 for back up images and it requires MS Software Shadow Copy.

I previously checked Remote Procedure Call and it is not disabled.

    Thanks.

    Hi Jim,

No, it's not a double post.

I thought I would approach the problem from a different view to see if I would get any further suggestions.

So far nothing has worked. I thought maybe a Repair might fix the problem. I may have to reinstall Windows XP Home to see if that will fix the problem.

    Hi,

We finally reinstalled Windows XP Home and this solved the problem with the starting of MS Software Shadow Copy service.

    Thanks for all replies.
