When I deleted an all-in-one utility called Fix-it 5 from VCOM, I could no longer connect to the Internet. The only solution was to hit the System Restore button.

It appears that a half-dozen dlls in Fix-it have attached themselves to the Winsock module, which then fails when they can no longer be found.

Is there any fix for getting rid of the (dated) Fix-it utility while retaining online capability?

    Hello ajglass,

    How to repair winsock
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm

How did you "delete" Fix-it 5? Does it have an Add/Remove entry and does it have an uninstaller?

Do you the original setup software for it, either cd or saved? One possibilty is to re install it to get the uninstaller back if its missung.

    Regards - Charles

    Thank you for your interest.

I have the original disc. There's no problem uninstalling the program via the Windows XP Add/Remove utility. Rather, the problem is that when Fix-It is gone, Winsock also senses its absence and refuses to fire up. At some point, the VCom Fix-It program "married" into the Internet TCP/IP hooks and after a "divorce" there's no more online access.

The only recourse is to reverse stride and reinstall either through the original disc or system restore.

    Hi ajglass,

Ok, did you try any of the Winsock fixes - it gets damaged by malware and this case is the same in principle.

Went looking for other links for repair of the Winsock stack:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=repair+winsock&btnG=Google+Search

You would do this after the uninstall obviously.

    Other options:
http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/howto-24.html replaces missing or corrupt system files using the i386 folder.

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm repair install - use the other options first.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks, that's most helpful. I'll take Fix-it off the machine when I'm not about to do any critical work online.
