I have an HPG85 All in One printer that requires special drivers and a control panel that accesses various features of the G85. The G85 was working well until I upgraded my computer to a Dell Optiplex. When I installed the G85 software, the installation reports a successful installation, but when I try and access speed dial numbers thru the desktop control panel I get a message saying the device is not found. The USB connections are working. I have installed and unistalled the software numerous times (I have done a forced un-install, cleared temp files, etc., etc. before re-installing, but nothing works.) I can print from Word, Excel, and other programs I just can't get the FAX controls to work. Any suggestions will be appreciated.:) I can scan documents using the scan feature when launched from program files, but not the G85's Desktop Control panel.

Have you connected the HPG85 telephone input jack to an active telephone line/ wall jack? If yes, HP should provide a test feature in fax settings to test this connection. If you are on dialup for Internet connection, you can not use the same line for faxing while you are connected to Internet.

    G85 Install Question

Dennis, Thanks for the reply but I guess I didn't give enough info in my question. The fax is plugged into an active separate fax line and I can fax from the machine. However, when trying to update my speed dial entries, I get a message saying that the HP desktop control console cannot communicate with the Fax. When I check the status of the G85 on the control cosole it reports that it is disconnected when, in fact, it is not. The usb check out as connected, and other functions of the unit work such as scanning, word document printing, etc. If the usb were not connected, those processes wouldn't work.

This would support fax modem to phone service is working along with internal printer/fax firmware.
In recent years HP's once stellar products/support have all but disappeared. HP's motive today seems to "create another salable product - throw some half baked software at it - let the user figure out the details ". Your issue appears to be in communication. HP's software is not recognizing / starting applications. This could be in drivers, current OS, MOBO chipset (yes Dell is one of the group). Where does one begin? In threads I've read some have change device compatibility to w98 / ME / 2000 (take your choice). Seems to be no singular solution. I've had not found a thread "specific" to your problem ... similar issues in networking / DSL - filter phone line issues. Did find a Hardware specific repair site for G85 which may be of use now or later. You can also read through a HP forum thread for G85 solution. Many posters use generic phrases for their problems, so it is a "hunt in the dark ". Hopefully this latter thread is available to the public. I'm warranty registered HP user who needed help getting my HP 2610 All-In-One Network printer to work ... and eventually did. HP's input, provided a web space .. the solutions came from users, not HP.
