I am presently networked via router with DSL & W98SE on Both systems. I am seriously interested in upgrading to wXP Pro on the client system, and leaving the Host system as the master with the router, DSL etc. Is this possible to do? Can I maintain a connection to the ISP withe the client system as it is connected now by upgrading this system alone?
    Please advise..Thank You

    Welcome to the Windows BBS!

I had 3 PCs in my house all with 98SE All of them connected to DSL through a Router with 4 port Switch. Upgraded two of them to XP Pro with no problems.

XP does recommend you user your OS CD or create a network disk to run on ALL PCs hooked to the network. My understanding is it makes sure all the PCs are configured the same for networking.

The other thing to watch out for is the XP firewall. Be sure and disable it if you plan on having file and printer sharing between the two PCs. If it's enable it blocks it.

Thanks for the reply Gary. I am a little unclear about the paragraph that recommends using the OS CD or to create a network disk. Which OS, XP or W98SE? I am unfamiliar with method of creating a network disk..Please help me with this. Thanks

XP has a wizard that will built a floppy for you to create network settings/setups on other PCs.

Not used it myself (prefer to do things by hand) but have read of problems using the thing with any other than XP machines - although the app says it can.

Any particular reason you want a 98 system to deal with the networking/internet connection? XP is lots better at it.

Thanks for the reply, I understand it a little better now. As far as wanting to keep the W98SE system as the host is because my wife is in many graphics and creative programs, her associations are telling her she could not operate these programs under XP.and she is afraid of losing all that data.

    Couple of thoughts here.

First - the specific PC that hosts your connection shouldn't make any difference to apps. She can continue to run them on 98 without problems.

Next - XP does a good job running apps under it's compatibility mode if for some reason they can't run if they see XP as the operating system. Just set em up, create the shortcut, and then use the feature on the shortcut icon to tell the app it is on 98. Might be worth a try at any rate.
