I'm having a problem with one (1) Windows update. Had a hard drive go out. Allbut one of the 39 updates were installed. The Security Update for .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack (KB886903) will not install. I get the Runtime Error shown on the attached.

Maybe this is a common thing. I don't know how to go about finding the solution. Would someone assist me with this.

    Hi Mudd,

I had the same problem, went on for days downloading and not installing.
In the end I de-installed the Net 1.1 system, re-downloaded and re-installed it. The update installed OK after that.
    Hope it works for you.

Thanks, I'll try that. I've tried everything else I know.

What a Bucket of Worms! I get the same RunTime error when trying to uninstall.

Nothing in NET will move. Hopefully some more suggestions will pop up.

    Thanks Roger.

From all the hints and help pages I've made some changes to my system. The result is not much better.

I no longer get the Runtime Error. The Hotfix it's wanting to install from Update Page is already shown in the Control Panel Add/Remove.

I tried to remove it but I get a little window (see below) that stops that.

I went to Win Update Page again and tried to download and install the Hotfix and it appeared it was going to make it. Went through the motions but at the end it indicated that is did not install.

Mudd-- Not clear whether you have tried to uninstall NET Framework using the Windows Uninstaller CleanUp Utility.

Yes I did. Anything that was identified as .NET was selected. Now there is nothing in the Add/Remove indicating .NET or any Hotfix pertaining to he same.

Tried to install again and the attached is what I get.

So, went back to Update thinking it would find all the things I selected and offer to download them again. Nothing, except for the Hofix KB886903, the one I've been trying to update.

Found a Micro Page that advised to "turn off Auto Update in Services, then delete all items in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, restart Auto Update in Services, then reboot." Did that but nothing changed except for the attached as stated above.

Did I miss anything you are asking?

    Hi Mudd,

    KB886903
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=886903 ASP.NET path validation vulnerability in Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

So after taking .NET off - the system has nothing to patch.

http://www.microsoft.com/net/basics_faq.mspx you also may not need .NET
The absence of .NET is not a security issue.

Off the top of my head, two apps that need .NET is MS office and visual basic studio.

    Regards - Charles

Thank you Sir. I think I understand what you wrote. I don't have MS Office, and visual basic studio is something I don't know.

My problem with all this is, "I'm basically a Perfectionist and if something doesn't work I want it fixed or removed. "

What would you say to the idea of backing up what I have then doing a format and reinstall windows? Would the backup when restored contain the problems I have? I use the backup program that is included in XP Pro. I just want to get this right.

    Hi Mudd,

If you're willing to re install the OS and you have confidence that your user data is backed up, then yes.

After getting the basic apps installed - such as AV and firewall, add your applications back on a little at a time, run, and then add some more. This will tell you whether some of your applications are causing problems.

You might also want tackle creating a OS only partition and a data partition. That would make life easier in the future, you can then use drive imaging software on the OS and repairing/re installing the OS w/o worrying about your data. Along with that then you would be able to move the Documents and Settings folder which contains user data - My Documents/My Pictures/Favorites to the data partition. Christer wrote a "how to" at the top of the XP section http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=49222 Moving Windows XP default folders Rev1

You don't have to do this all at once though.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Mudd,
Getting desperate? I know the feeling, but formatting seems to be going a bit far!
I have a procedure that I follow whenever I remove some software, especially MS software.
I remove the software, using the add/remove window if possible.
I back up my registry using ERUNT (Free)
I run Registry Mechanic and repair all the entries that it finds.
(In this case I would also switch off auto update before closing down)
    Reboot.

It works for me, although I know that some folks don't like using registry cleaners. RM is not free, but there is a free alternative, RegscrubXP, which never gave me any problems.

    Hope that helps,

    Roger:eek:

I think you need .NET Framework software to be able to use .NET Passport, which allows entry into several of MS' web-based programs.

Thank all of you for the suggestions. To bad I don't have all the expertise you all do.

I know I need .NET for some things. I have a Hot-mail Account I use when I think I'll get trash mail. Today I can't sign in on it. So I need to do something.

Charles - I think I'll go that route. Thanks for that. I'm going to read the link about partitions. I don't know how to do that. I had a SATA setup and when I reformatted I didn't know how to set that up. Now I have two 160GB had drives. The second one is blank at this point. Maybe Christer's page will tell about using the first drive to put the OS on and the second for data.

Roger - Thanks. I used I have RegScrubXP. Used it a long time also. It always finds something to do.

Jim - Thanks for hanging with me, not only this time. Next time I'm in the "hole" in NM I may try to look you up and buy the coffee/beer/milk/whatever!

    Again, thanks all.

    Hi Mudd,

FYI, a heavily loaded XP - loaded with programs like media tools - would need at the most 15 - 20 GB's of space. We had a thread on this last year http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=40176&highlight=ideal

So if you use the 1st HD for the OS only, that's a lot of wasted space - but up to you. I would partition the 1st HD, the 2nd HD of course is now currently a Drive/partition itself.

In your current setup and in any future setup, that 2nd HD can be used as a backup location for your data - in addition to removable media. I have multiple drives and use them for backups cutting down on the need to burn data out.

    Regards - Charles

OK Charles. You have convinced me to Partition the C with a 15GB and the rest for the Programs. I'll use the second drive for backups and other ****. Also, I have an external drive I have been using for Backups.

So here I am with 2X160 plus external 120GB, 512MB flash drive, and two writers and a stack of Disc. To fill up things I suppose I should download and store everything possible!!

I do have the XP Media Center and store a lot of movies I record from TV.

If this is successful I'll see you on the BBS Form again. If not the next time I'm in NJ I'll whistle while passing.

Thanks a lot for your help and easy to understand instruction.

Since this seems to be more related to the OS than hardware I've moved it to the XP forum. Perhaps you'll get more input there.

Thank you Sir. I've about decided to go with Charles suggestion. All I need now is the guts to do it.
