    Hi there,

I regularly backup my documents on an old computer using Windows 98SE - MyBackup.qic. The computer will be replaced with Windows XP Pro when it stops working. I have tried a trial run of transferring the backup onto a computer using Windows XP Pro (using the Windows Backup program) and it won't work.

"The backup file contains unrecognisable data and can not be used."

Windows XP Pro has its backup files in the form Backup.bkf.

Is there a way to get it to work? or a backup program that will run on Windows 98SE that Windows XP Pro backup will read? The backup is made onto a rewriteable CD. I need to use a backup program (not drop and drag) as it is quite time consuming.

    Your help is appreciated.

    Hello Roslyn,

An alternative: on the XP system, search for Using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Help and Support located on the Start menu for instructions on how to copy your files to the new system.

Another potential way would be to hook up the 98's hard drive to the new system - via USB and have your files accessable that way. That would involve getting an external hard drive enclosure. Internal hookup would be problematical because the new system would be a SATA type HD connection, not the EIDE that the old HD is.

I don't know of any burning software that is compatable with both 98 and XP.

    Regards - Charles

    Snazzy Backup
    Freebyte Backup

I've never used either one but I'm sure they'd both get the job done. The first one backs up to zip format so you wouldn't have to install the program on the computer you're transferring the files to in order to retrieve the files. I'm not sure what format the second one backs up to but I have used some of their other software in the past and it's always worked as advertised. If neither of these appeal to you, post back or do a search at Google. These are by no means the only free backup programs available out there.
