    This forum is fine :)

It's several years since I ran 98, but I suggest you run System File Checker

The WMP requires a codec to run the DVD player . Wich you must purchase for the WMP.

ATIs 'drivers'require tedious inspection in order to install the correct w98 version #s compatible with todays DVDs.

In both of the above. You might just consider purchasing a new software DVD player software. Such as one from Roxio etc. With w98 usually the software that came with the DVD drive is your best bett in getting it (w98 and DVD) to run correctly. You could consider using the actual DVDs software(1),re-installing it (2),and (3) updating it if possible.

If you have an OEM computer - such as one from HP,Dell etc. Those installed programs will have to be troubleshooted from their respective customer support.

Your system stats you did not list. But as it is w98 is 'barely able'to convince present day version stats, that its components are 'compatible,or backword compatible.

Im not even sure that an Update XP Home Edition disk (the cheapest XP update available from Retail ) has a DVD codec with it. You should perhaps put both XP Home Edition update onboard,in dual-boot mode.

-Or take another different software DVD players software off the shelf from your local software retailer.

ATI is no longer updating its drivers for Radeon based equipment for W98.Even though the Media Center has such options for its last w98 version. Supposedly the DVD codec is available from them for w98. But like yourself,a reinstall from the required Disk from ATI does not run the DVD through the Media Center software . (this from personal experience, and its extreme tedious work).

Easiest thing, again , to do , is take a different DVD software player from a retailer. It should have your best bett components. Including the requirement of the DVD codec.AND compatable media interfacing. Be sure the label states ability to run w98. But you should hurry becuase it might be the LAST available software that will actually WORK for your DVD player for w98.

Be sure and make an Image of the Computers hardrive in w98. So that in the future, that working software configuration will always be available to run the computer. You might want to reply with some system configuration stats.

There are several ways to attack the problem. So be sure to reference any suggestions and choose the best. So that you can prioritize your risk. WMP will run with whatever DVD codec is installed with the DVD softwares package. Or Installed player.

I personally cannot get ATIs DVD application to run.Not for its media center for/from the Video Drivers software suite. But the Player from Roxio,..or the DVD's Drive' Default installed programs, will run respectfully.

    --------------------
You might try troubleshooting the Video Card . (for video capture) . The early Video cards equiped with video capture from ATI,require several different precise installs. Check you system - Device Manager, for any ! marks. I found that only a single instance of the Media center was necesary - in the event of a TV card AND a Video card. But you need an installed 'capture driver',wich is found only under the heading now for AIW(last I looked) to be installed.

In this event of a Video Card troubleshooting. The drivers and installed software for the video card must be reinstalled.A 'very good thing to do is to use both Microsoft Updates, and Ati in order to run your hardware. Microsoft will install (if still available),a Microsoft Driver for w98 ATI. Somewhat back versioned, but runnable. Then the ATI Media Center, and the 'Capture drivers should be installed.

So that both the Capture drivers, and Video card drivers are installed. The sticky point is the Media Center. Where if you have like I said two cards from ATI,it is only necesary to install one instance of the ATIs media Center.....there's more of course....

    It is tedious.

This means an uninstall of the Video cards drivers and accesories. Directx .Atis Media Center softwares.A re-install of the same.

Yet I would not count of running the DVD through the w98 DVD accesories available from ATI.

It might be a matter of an IRQ conflict with a USB device. Or PCI card device as well.

So anything can be said without looking at the system stats.

    Thanks.

    Hi Everyone.
Thanks for the help, I tried many things but none has been successful. However, I have installed a second hard drive and It is ready to go. The dvd works and the other players work.
Now this may not be the place for this but I need to do a few things.
I want to move Outlook Express and all my email folders to the new drive. I also want to move Skype and there may be other programs. Most of the programs I use I have the disks.
    Thanks a lot.
    Lewis

For Outlook (Express), go to File -> Export. You will need to select the type of file to save the data (eg .txt). Transfer that file to the new drive and use Import in that Outlook (Express). Before you do Import, check which version the original Outlook is, it will ask you the version (in that version, click the Help button ->About).

Sorry, don't know Skype. Maybe search for import/export at the Skype website.

ATI continues to provide updated drivers and software that work on 9x. The Catalyst 6.2 is offered for 9x and even installs a beta driver for several cards that did not come with support for 9x (like my x850PRO.)

The latest ATI Multimedia Center's (9.13) player components all work properly on 9x even though it is not supported. The caveat here is that you must install it on an XP system first to save the DVD decoder's setup.exe file. Copy that to a cdr and use it by browsing to it during the DVD Decoder's installation. You choose the "run previously downloaded setup file" in the setup choices. If you choose to download it from the internet, it will not download the codec to a 9x system. But it all installs and runs perfectly on 9x. You do (like on XP) need the original ATI cd to prove you qualify for the DVD decoder. You can't simply run the DVD decoder setup.exe by its own. You need to have the installer run it for it to interface properly with ATI MMC's DVD Player.

This fellow's problem was probably related to messed up files on his system. The fresh install cleaned up whatever that was. The way things were, even a retail DVD software player probably would have given him the same problems.
