Difference in external modems

I am changing from one provider to another and already have a Westell modem for dsl connection. Now the new provider says they use a Motorola Surfboard modem. Can I use the modem I already have or is there some reason I need to get another?

msbooch--I may be all wrong, but I do not believe dsl modems can be used for cable connections.
In any event, the cable service supplier knows what is compatible with their service, such as DOCSIS version compliance. Ask them.
If you purchase your Cable service from stores such as BestBuy, Circuit City, etc, they often have a deal where you get the modem free. This includes first class modems such as Surfboard. I have not compared the cost of the cable service when you do this, so better check that you are not paying anymore.

 

Thanks Jim. I do believe that is why they want me to purchase a different modem. I decided to check out ebay and sure enough, there were lots of Motorola modems to bid on that would take care of the situation.

msbooch--Too late to get it free from Circuit City? They are offering the usual free after rebates with cable service activation (through them) deal this week
