    Hi

I'm experiencing a strange problem. It seems that I can:
    - drag-n-drop files between folders
    - drag-n-drop into a zip file
    - 'extract all' from a zip

    However, I can NOT
    - drag-n-drop (extract) from a zip

Also a similar problem is affecting Outlook 2003 where I can't drag-n-drop an attachement from an email, however I can drag-n-drop the entire email or "save as" the attachment.

    Any ideas...?

What "happens" when you try to drag n drop? Get any sort of message? Are you using XP's compression utility or something else?

    Hi Steve,

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm not using any other compression utility. The only preogram Ihave installed recently is Nero 7 Ultra (dvd/cd burning app). I've checked out the Nero forums as well.

To answer your question: Absolutely nothing! No error message. It does sound like the disk is writing but nothing shows in the directory. Another clue - If I
    1) extract a zip (ie folder.zip)
    2) open the newly created "/folder" and see "file.doc "
    3) open "folder.zip" and drag-n-drop "file.doc" to "/folder "

Then I get a message "This folder already contains a file ... would you like to replace..." - and I can replace the existing file.

KingB--The problem you describe in your latter post sounds like normal behavior to me. It seems you have successfully extracted the files in "folder.zip" to "/folder ". So when you try to drag and drop the individual "file.doc" from "folder.zip" to "/folder ", you are being told a copy of "file.doc" is already there. Which it is because you have extracted the original "file.doc" to "/folder" when you extracted all of "folder.zip" to "/folder ". And it seems the drag and drop is working fine in this case.
Why you cannot drag and drop "file.doc" to an empty "/folder ", which I understand to be your problem in the first post, I do not know. But at least you still are able to extract from the zip.
What Zip program is this happening in?

    Hi Jim

Yes - the fact that I can overwrite but not write the first time is the strange part to all this.

I'm using XP's zip handling - no external prog.

Would there be some sort of erro log that might give a clue?

KingB--I just opened a .zip file using XP's compression program and tried (using right click|drag) to drag a file from the opened .zip file onto the desktop. It worked fine.
That does not help you, but it apparently can be done, so it is confirmed that your XP compression program must be corrupt.
Did you use left click|drag or right click|drag?
I have no experience fixing XP Compression. But, in general, if you have corrupt Windows XP files, Start|Run|type sfc /scannow|OK. Have your WindowsXP CD available to insert in your CD-ROM drive when asked.
The fact that you are having problems with Outlook as well suggests that something is corrupt.

Did sfc /scannow twice - took a while each time. Did not ask me for winXP cd - probably because I have an HP which has the d:/ setup as recovery (all files should probably be on that) - rebooted = no difference.

    I tried:
    - left click | drag = nothing
    - right click | drag | dialog (move here) = nothing
    - right click | drag | dialog (copy here) = nothing

I loaded a trial version of WinRAR and drag and drop works from this app. But this dosen't fix Outlook. My guess here is that Outlook must use XP's zip handling to manage attachments.

KingB--I do not use Outlook or Office, but can you uninstall it from Control Panel|Add/Remove? Then reinstall.

    KingB,

There is the "WinZip Companion for Outlook "... maybe this will help you out. There is a 45 day *free* trial, check it out HERE.

Mr.B--Interesting find. Not clear whether it works with WinXP.

    Jim,

If you mean OfficeXP, that's Outlook 2002.

Mr.B--You are right. The reference you provided says "WinZip Companion for Outlook works with Microsoft Outlook 2000, Outlook 2002, and Outlook 2003 only. "
I read it too quickly and assumed it had left out WinXP.

    Hi WelshJim

I just wanted to say thanks to you and everyone else for the help.

I tried re-installing Office but had no luck. Finally broke down and re-installed the OS ... works! Needed a spring cleaning anyways - Now I just need to get all my apps installed and configured to how I like. :)

KingB--Thanks for posting back. You are most welcome.
Sorry I could not have come up with an easier solution. Sounds like your XP compression program was indeed corrupt. Too bad sfc /scannow could not fix it.
