Copy & Paste it into the same folder as the old one. You will get a window asking if you are sure you wish to replace the file.

lewislewis--I do not know where you got the new .dll file from or why you think you need a new .dll file.
Since this is a Microsoft Windows system .dll file, you should check to make sure it is compatible with your versions of MS software

If you want to pursue this further, please post the information mentioned in my first sentence above.

    new .dll

    Hi Welshjim,
While running a check it was discovered I had an earlier version and should get the newer version. As suggested by Whiskeyman I had tried Copy & Paste it into the same folder as the old one.
This did not work as the dll was in use by windows. Thats why I asked how to change the old build for the new build.
    I hope this is clear.
    Thanks
    Lewis

You can boot to a Dos prompt and copy it from there or you can use something like MoveOnBoot to do it.

That said, are you sure you need to replace the file? Are you having problems with it? Unless you're having problems with it, I'd leave it as is. Newer doesn't necessarilly mean better. I've seen too many cases of "newer version" files causing problems where there were none before. Ever heard the term "dll hell "? ;)

If however, you're having a problem of some kind, then I'd go ahead and change the file.

lewislewis--Rather than replace that one file, perhaps redownload and install the Visual C++ program--appropriate for Win98SE-- it comes with.

But, if what you now have works, perhaps do not fix it?

    Me again

    Hi All,
Last week I lost use of my DVD player. I use Power DVD or ATI which came with All in Wonder card. I am also unable to use WMP9 for a lot of files.
While trying to figure out how to fix this problem I found out about this .dll.
So I have a thread about the DVD player, that seems to have stalled, So I was hoping this may be a help.
    I downloaded the msvcrt.dll here.
    http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcrt

From what I am hearing now I am not sure what this .dll is for.

I am frustrated about not being able to use the dvd player.
    Thanks again for your interest.
    Lewis

lewislewis--I am still not clear why you feel this file will solve your problem
What check was this? Did it mention a specific newer version you should get?
You can determine the version number of a .dll file (right click|Properties|Version tab) and then look here to see if it is likely going to fix your DVD problem.
    http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?dlltype=file&l=55&alpha=+MSVCRT.dll+&S=1&x=5&y=6
Maybe someone more knowledgeable about DVD players will chime in.

That file is installed by Internet Explorer. You could try going to Add/Remove programs and click Remove for IE, it should offer to do a repair. Otherwise download and install the latest version of IE for Win 98.

If you see the error box again, it should say which program is reporting it at the top left-hand corner.

With this problem and the other missing files you spoke about in your previous thread, I might suspect some of the Windows Update programs. Suggest you download and reinstall the updates if you had problems with those (I only download a few of the smaller ones at a time or one or two of the larger ones to avoid problems if the install goes wrong).

You will need to get the MS/Windows programs running and after that, if the DVD does not "come back ", reinstall programs associated with that problem.

If you get still get problems I would run an "over the top" reinstall of Windows. That will reinstall all the basic Windows files, then look at the problems with third party programs.

    Matt

To replace a Windows system file, the easiest way (in my opinion) is to use System File Checker. You should first copy (not move) the old dll file to another location in case you need to restore it.

Go to Start>Run, type "sfc" (without the quotes), click OK.

Check "Extract one file from installation disk," use the Browse button to navigate to the original old dll file you want to replace (not the copy you just made), select it, click on the Open button and then on the Start button.

In the dialog box that pops up, for the "Restore From" field, use the Browse button to navigate to the folder where you have the new file and select it.

Then for the "Save file in" field, use the Browse button to navigate to the folder where you want it to put the new file (same location as the old dll you indicated in the first step) and select that folder. Click OK and whatever button on the main dialog box to tell it to proceed.

I'm pretty sure I have the steps right but I'm doing this from memory. It should be close, anyway. ;)
