when I try and view a folder with icons which appear as thumbnails (typically video files but also photos) I get the following message

'To Help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program

    Name: Windows Explorer
    Publish: Microsoft Corporation

When I click close message I then get this

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I can't work out how to resolve this issue, any ideas? thanks

tarkmiddy - Welcome to the Board :)

This sounds very much like a 'Data Execution Prevention' (DEP) message, but I am puzzled that it references Windows Explorer....

You receive a "Data Execution Prevention" error message in Windows XP Service Pack 2 or in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

A detailed description of the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature in Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, and Windows Server 2003

If the solutions given in the first article do not help I suggest you run System File Checker - details here

shot in the dark = turn on 'view hidden/sys files' and uncheck 'hide protected OS files' in tools/folderopts/view. then kill the thumbs.db files which are the cache files for thumbnail view.

i'd prolly opt to do this in any view but thumbnail view. then i'd maybe think about rclicking the containing folder/properties and set it to 'customized' folder type 'video' or such. i'd avoid the compulsion to check 'subfolders' too since this has led to issues when i've done such if the top level folder is a 'system' type like 'my videos' or 'my pictures'. iow - don't change the top level folder but rather do customized for each folder BELOW the top level one. and do them 1 at a time. i can't explain exactly why i've done this but ... win has shown the ability to mess up the view modes on my machines when i've not done this ;)

once done, u can undo the view settings to normal.

i'd add that sp2 and latest updates has seemed to 'fix' the view issues i've seen in the past. particularly on customized folders. but it did take a clean install to get it to work proper. i've not seen the view issues since then.
