lewislewis--It has been some time since I ran Win98, but I think Device Manager has a Wizard to help install drivers.
First make a note where the driver is on your hard drive. And whether it is a .exe file or the actual driver file. The .exe file may install the driver for you or it may be a file that must be opened to deposit the actual driver file on the hard drive.
Now in the Device Manager list, right click the specific hardware item. I cannot remember if that already gives you an Install Driver option, but if not, then click Properties. The window which opens should show a Driver tab. Click on that tab and start the Install Driver procedure. You will be asked where to find the drive. Direct that line to the place on the harddrive where the driver has been downloaded or deposited. And follow the instructions.

The error messages talk about a Windows application rather than a hardware device driver. They are described as "virtual" drivers and are all Microsoft files.

They may be from installing extra Windows applications, like a network protocol (I wondered about VPN Virtual Private Networking) or maybe something like a DirectX update (I found one in a DirectX folder, all were in my Windows\System folder).

Were you installing something before you found this problem? I would suggest to try reinstalling it to completion and if it was something you do not need then uninstall it.
