    OK, here's the situtation:

    My computer to kids computer:

In Windows Explorer, I see the drives in My Network Places, all 4 computers and I can access any drive except the kids, which I just switched over to XP Pro. States I do not have permission and in the Explorer, they show, named but listed as "Unknown "

Now when I click on Entire Network\Microsoft Windows Network, all 4 computers are listed and I can access ALL the hard drives (including the Kids).

Why is that and how do I get My Network Places fixed to work correctly...

    Kids computer to mine:

They can access ALL my drives EXCEPT (D).

What is wrong? The permissions is the same on ALL computers!!!!

    How can I fix this???

First problem, pretty simple actually. Open up My Network Places, navigate to the kids network drive, and right click on it. Select map as network drive, and give it a drive name.

Second problem, try right clicking on your D: drive and selecting sharing and security. Select permissions and add the kids computer into it. (you may have to disable simple file sharing - you can do this by in any folder selecting tools then folder options. Then the view tab, and scrolling to the bottom and unticking the Use simple file sharing option.)

Hmmmm... for some reason the file sharing did not catch the 1st few times (I wonder why?) Kept turning it off and back on and fater awhile it finally started to work. As for the drives listed in the explorer, I just deleted them. Still perfer the way 98se handled this aspect....

since the network is peer to peer, u should setup each machine to have the same account credentials required to access as u see fit. IOW - u want admin ability on all? make sure u'r account exists on all and is admin ;)

i'd avoid network neigh entirely since it's 'election' based in p2p environments. it's a long story here but ... to access anything, just use UNC pathing. if u've got a share named MYSTUFF on the pc called KIDS and u have permissions for it, to reach it just do:

    start/run \\kids\mystuff

if u'r admin on all machines, u can do direct pathing to the entire drive as:

    start/run \\machine_name\x$

where x is the drive letter. this affords access to everything more or less but u MUST be admin on the machine u'r trying to reach.

u can do the exact same thing as already mentioned in the map_network_drives options in explorer. a much better option if u intend to make the shares avail consistently.
