I just installed a second hard drive on my computer - 20 GB, to take the load off the original 8 GB drive. I've been moving a lot of stuff to the new drive. I'd like to move Netscape, since I have a lot of saved mail files, but I get the impression that simply moving the entire folder would not be a good idea... there seems to be a lot of stuff in the Registry pointing to the current location of various Netscape files. Any suggestions?

    Thanks...

    Hello acelightning,

    My suggestions...
(I assume you want to move your profile folder, right?)
(I also assume you are using Netscape 4.xx, if using Netscape 6/7, see the end)
    1. start Netscape, clear all cache (and may be history)
    2. exit Netscape, and back up your entire Profile folder. (Ramona has a guide about how to backup your profile, or you can read mine Transfer/Backup Netscape Profiles, and Backup Netscape Mail)
    3. uninstall Netscape. (Ramona would have a nice guide for you)
    4. move your entire profile folder to new location.
      (say from
      C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\xxxx\
      to
      D:\Users\xxxx\)
    5. Open pref.js by plain text editor and change all reference from old directory to new directory, if there are any.
    6. (Re-) Install Netscape, you can install in the same old location if you want to.
    7. Create a new profile, you should create a profile with the same profile name, but choose D:\users\ is the directory.
    8. done.
If you are using Netscape 6/7, then you should follow the above, expect the profile location is different, see this page for more information about profile locations.)

Actually, I want to move the entire Netscape folder and all its sub-folders, including my user profile. Is my only option to uninstall Netscape entirely, and reinstall it on the new drive?

    That is your only option.

Drat. Ah well... I've moved so many other things over to the new drive, I've got plenty of room to leave Netscape right where it is. Maybe when NS 7.2 comes out - assuming they've gotten it stable by then - I'll delete the whole thing and install the new one on the larger drive.

    Thanks.

    Another method

If you haven't made the move yet and have about $30, there is an alternate method available. Purchase Symantic's Clean Sweep (there are problably other products out there, but this is what I use and know works).

Among it many functions is one called simply MOVE. It will move any program from one directory to another. This includes a function to replicate on another PC.

Clean Sweep's prime use is to clean up drives that have duplicate files, bad registry entries, etc., but I find the MOVE to really be a time and mistake saver.

I've already got Norton SystemWorks 2001 on this machine, although I didn't install Clean Sweep - I still have the CD, so I can just install it now, I suppose. Thanks for the tip!
