    Hello all!

I'm in the process of reinstalling an older computer with Windows 98SE and Office 97. Determining which updates to Windows 98SE that are needed is easy through Windows Update but for Office 97 it's a different story.

There are updates to Office and the different components separately and in all I have identified twenty updates. I have found out that one of them, a Y2K fix for Outlook, is also included in SR-2b. Are more updates included in SR-2b? Maybe all updates released prior to SR-2b?

Will it suffice to install SR-1, SR-2b, the value pack for SR-2b and the updates released post SR-2b?

    Thanks for your time,
    Christer

Have you tried using the Office Update site and let it determin which ones you need? Or did the site die for these older apps?

As I understand it, Office Update works only with Office 2K and later. If I remember correctly, I did empirical tests on that a few years ago (tried with Office 97 but it didn't work).

    Hi Christer :)

I'm just about to start to attempt this very thing - have downloaded these from individual download links at the Office Update site:

    Code:
    SR1OFF97 EXE 8,890,664 02/03/06 15:26 sr1off97.exe
    SR2BOF97 EXE 24,165,848 02/03/06 14:50 sr2bof97.exe
    PF_SETUP EXE 144,216 02/03/06 13:45 pf_setup.EXE
    FM2PASTE EXE 673,608 02/03/06 13:51 fm2paste.exe
    JETCOPKG EXE 4,878,824 02/03/06 16:37 JetCopkg.exe
    OFFICE~1 EXE 3,082,648 02/03/06 17:21 Office97-KB830354-ENU.exe
    WD97MCRS EXE 3,605,048 02/03/06 17:26 Wd97mcrs.exe
    WD97LYP EXE 3,611,288 02/03/06 16:41 Wd97lyp.exe
    WDAC97 EXE 3,087,544 02/03/06 16:44 wdac97.exe
    OFF97UIP EXE 90,440 02/03/06 16:47 Off97UIP.exe
    WD97SP EXE 98,096 02/03/06 17:29 Wd97SP.EXE
    WW5PKG EXE 582,872 02/03/06 17:33 WW5Pkg.exe
    OFFHLINK EXE 148,944 02/03/06 17:35 OFFHLINK.exe
    OFFICE~1 TXT 2,898 02/03/06 17:45 Office97 patches - notes.txt
all the patches need SR2b beforehand & I think SR1 has to be applied before SR2b

taking a backup first ;) will try to get on with the patches tonight

    ==

noticed at Secunia: if you check by Office97 app it doesn't show some vulnerabilities

but looking up by individual vulnerabilities** instead, checking which versions of the program are affected, shows that the Office97 program is on the affected list. Confused? I am!

(**I just patched up a Office2k installation - & checked to see whether the Office2k vulnerabilities affected other versions of Office too)

    best wishes, HJ

    Hello HJ!

I went to Office Update, Downloadable for Office 97/98. I started with Office and then the individual components. My list, in order of release date, looks almost like yours. What is in common is marked with an *:

    *Sr1off97.exe
    *fm2paste.EXE
    *Wd97SP.EXE
    *Off97UIP.exe
    *pf_setup.EXE
arch97sv.exe (Outlook - prevents data loss if power failure during archiving)
    *sr2bof97.exe
O97dtfix.exe (Outlook - not needed, included in sr2bof97.exe!)
xl8p9pkg.exe (Excel - Macro Virus Warning) (needed if xl8p10pkg.exe - cumulative?)
wd97au.exe (Word - Web Authoring Tools, not security related)
off97vpk.EXE (value pack, not security related, is it needed?)
    *JetCopkg.exe
ppt97sec.EXE (PowerPoint - HTML Script Vulnerability)
    xl8p10pkg.exe (Excel - REGISTER.ID Function Vulnerability) (substitutes xl8p9pkg.exe - cumulative?)
    *Wd97lyp.exe
    *wdac97.exe
    *Wd97mcrs.exe
O97attch.exe (Outlook - Email Attachment Security)
    *Office97-KB830354-SVE.exe
    Office97-KB830356-SVE.exe (Excel - Security Patch)

Your list, what is in common is marked with an *:

    *SR1OFF97 EXE
    *SR2BOF97 EXE
    *PF_SETUP EXE
    *FM2PASTE EXE
    *JETCOPKG EXE
    *OFFICE~1 EXE
    *WD97MCRS EXE
    *WD97LYP EXE
    *WDAC97 EXE
    *OFF97UIP EXE
    *WD97SP EXE
WW5PKG EXE (Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) versions)
OFFHLINK EXE (have not been able to identify, what is this?)

As you can see, our lists differ in the updates for separate components that I have but you don't. You have two that I don't, one not needed (for me) and the other I don't know about.

What I didn't find by Microsoft Search, Google did:

OFFHLINK EXE (Word - Hyperlinks Update)

The vulnerability is in Word but the hotfix patches Internet Explorer. The question is if it has been fixed in IE6, which I have installed on the computer?

    Hi Christer
    in kb/q241873 it says:
This is a problem with the Hlink.dll file that ships with Word 97.
    and:
NOTE: When installing the Hyperlinks update, you may receive the following message when you attempt to install the Hyperlink update more than once, or you have previously updated Microsoft Internet Explorer:
"Microsoft Office has already been patched. "

hmmm. I'm showing 16th Nov 2004 for HLINK.DLL on a box which is fully patched at WindowsUpdate, but hasn't had any of the Office97 patches applied yet.

which would seem to mean that patching at WindowsUpdate has already fixed this issue (as long as the scope of the problem is confined to the DLL)

    ==

thanks for your list - ouch, looks like I a missed a few ! (even allowing for the components I don't chose to install)

    ==

something else which I noticed when patching the Office2000 / 98SE installation:

it says "start by going to WindowsUpdate and making sure your IE is fully patched" which I duly did; and then went on to apply all the relevant patches to Office2k

afterwards I went back to WindowsUpdate, and discovered that I had unpatched the MDAC thing :( so applied the MDAC patch again at WindowsUpdate... then, back to Office Update to scan - & finally passed as OK

So, I'll certainly be revisiting WindowsUpdate after I patch Office97!

    best wishes, HJ

    (running late!)

    HJ,
thanks for the feedback. I don't know when I will find the time to do the deed but probably some time during next week. I'll report back too.

I had reduced my list to:

and I planned on installing the bold ones (mostly security related).

However, it seems like the ones for Excel and Word are cumuative:

I already concluded that the xl8p#pkg security patches are cumulative but should we interpret that as SR-2b + KB830356 (labeled as security patch) does the trick for Excel?

Should we interpret that as SR-2b + KB830354 (labeled as security patch) does the trick for Word?

If so #1: In addition to those two, only the following are "necessary ": fm2paste, arch97xx, JetCopg and o97attch which brings the number down to six.

If so #2: The swedish Office Update site is rather confusing and misinformative.

    Two links:

Major Microsoft Updates which has not been updated since 23nov2003 but that's good enough for Office 97. Reliability?

If this is correct, the number is down to five ... ... unless that site prompts additions to the list.

Updating Microsoft Office which seems to be up-to-date (judged by the Office XP updates).
I haven't compared yet but will later ... ... or maybe not, this gets more and more complicated and contradicting regarding the question of cumulativity.

Bear in mind that I'm only planning on installing security related updates, not additions to or extensions of functionality.
