I don't know how it happened but I just noticed that all of the email newsletters I receive have no images any longer. Just little boxes.

I looked at all of the options in the Edit/Preferences area such as HMTL, etc. and since I didn't think I had changed anything I can't seem to find a way to correct this. I know that I didn't change any preferences on the individual sites as to how they sent their newsletters.

And it is not only the newsletters. It's also emails I received from companies I've ordered items from. These were "normal" a couple of days ago.

I have no problems with personal emails containing images and pictures.

    I am running Netscape 7.2.

    Thanks.

I, hardly, use NS7.2, but I checked it, and, I don't see anything changed with any of the newsletters which I receive. Of course, your newsletters are, most likely not like mine, and the problem may be in the sender, and not necessarily in the receiver.
The newsletters I tried are from britannica.com, from my ISP, i.e. cox.net, and apple.com, for general apple news and Quicktime news.

Mine are from ZDNET.com and some are from CNET. I also gets news updates from CBS, etc.

I don't think I changed anything and don't understand what in the world is wrong.

Perhaps someone else has some ideas.

    Thanks.

    vegaspat,

I do block remote images in email. In Netscape 7.2, the setting is here:

    Edit | Preferences | Privacy & Security | Images
Image Acceptance Policy - Do not load remote images in Mail & Newsgroup Messages

    Ramona,

I just checked and all that is checked in that setting -Accept all images and under" Animated images should loop" As many times as the image specifies.

I've never been in that area before and the only thing I can remember changing lately is some font setting. Now I don't know where that might be.

    Thanks.

    Ramona,

What should the fonts be set at under "Appearance "? Could that have created the image problem?

    Thanks Ramona.

Guess that didn't have anything to do with this current problem.

    Any more ideas?

    Thanks.

    vegaspat,

Are you using a Theme other than the default? If so, revert back to Modern and see if that does the trick.

It was set on Classic, but I re-set it to Modern and that didn't help either.

I just can't imagine what the problem could be or what I could have done to bring it on.

I even did a System Restore which I don't like to do because I really don't understand the whole thing and that didn't do anything either.

What re-installing Netscape? Would I lose all of my current emails?

    Thanks.

    vegaspat,

Reinstalling Netscape won't do anything, as the problem lies in your Profile. I've been in and out this evening, but am home for now, and will see if I can figure this out for you...

    vegaspat,

Another setting to check in Mail & Newsgroups: View | Message body as
    Select: Original HTML

Here are some reasons you may be seeing the blank image with a red X:

The sender doesn't know how to send an image
The image could be hosted on a secondary website that might be down
That website could be blocked by your firewall, or adblocking software
The image has been removed from the remote website

I would not be able to reproduce the problem, unless I would subscribe to the same newsletters. I really don't care to do, because I can receive all the news from ZDNet via RSS feed. It has happened that some sites do not send their newsletters properly, and I have, at least, one case where they provide a special link, in some cases.
I would not be concerned to the point of doing a system restore. It does not mean that what is happening today can be pushed back to the past.
One question that I did not ask is, do you have any of the old newsletters which were showing images? If so, do you have a problem with those. If so there may be something about the program, and it may not hurt to uninstall/reinstall it. And, is it possible that something else was done to your machine since you started having the image problem?

vegaspat: To clarify something, do you get "the blank image with a red X" as Ramona said, or do you get either a square or rectangular frame of lines with a small icon in the upper left-hand corner, that looks sort of like a postage stamp that's been torn in half diagonally? I get the latter kind (with NS 7.1) every once in a while. Which kind you're getting could make a difference.

First of all I cannot find View | Message body in Mail and Newsgroups.

I don’t have access to any of the old messages to see if they are being "read" the same way. I cleaned out my trash just in case this was some sort of a memory problem.

Actually the square does not have an X in it. It is a box heavily outlined in blue. Inside that box is a rectangle with the upper right corner turned down and it appears to have a faint diagonal line running through it. There are little green, pink and blue items in it.

The newsletters are ones I’ve been receiving and reading for a long, long time. They are from CBS, NBC, Zdnet, Cnet plus companies that I’ve ordered from who send their catalogs.

I’m really not sure when this happened but I only noticed it today. The fonts look larger than normal. That’s why I thought perhaps I messed things up when I was messing around in the Appearance area.

Now instead of images for links, etc. the entire email has those little boxes practically covering the entire thing.

I hope I've answered all the questions.

If you are into Mail, select View from the Menu(top) toolbar. Then work your way down the several lines, until you run into a Message as, just below Headers.
The reason why I asked about the old messages is because I wanted to differentiate between a present behavior, or something else. I have never seen symbols like you describe, so I can't help you with that.
But, you could contact one of the website, and explain what you see.
The fonts would not have anything to do, if you have the same check mark as seen in Ramona's set up. The actual fonts which you selected have nothing to do with what you see on a website, if you have checked to "allow documents to use other fonts ".

Well, I have no problems viewing any of the actual websites. It's just this mail thing. I've looked at everything and simply can't understand what I do to always have these problems that no one else experiences. Must be that black cloud I'm under. <G>

Thanks anyway. I do appreciate your help.

    ALERT!!

    You folks are WONDERFUL!!

After posting my last defeated message, I went to View/Message Body as and guess what? Somehow this stupid person must have clicked on the Simple HTML vs the Original HTML and guess what? All is well again.

I just can't thank everyone enough. Now I am able to create some other problem to pester you folks with.

    THANKS!!!!!

We see a lot of these changes, and it is worth while going to the different preferences. May be it just happens, may be it is done accidentally, but it happens.
One of the most common happenings is the View|Sort by which is Ascending, by default. I like to see the more recent messages, first, and almost anything will change back from Descending to Ascending.
