As most probably already know, MS has released the latest Critical Updates.
For my PC running Win XP Pro SP2 I was offered only two.
    1) The latest Malicious Spyware Removal Tool and
    2) A security fix for Excel Viewer (KB914451).
No problem with the Malicious Spyware update, but, while the fix for Excel Viewer will download, it will not install from the Windows Update site. I have the designated version of Excel Viewer so that is not the problem. I turned off my antivirus program.
I have also tried to download and install from the site describing the fix in more detail.
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...D1-0542-475B-91B5-90DD2AF2C0FC&displaylang=en
    Again, it will not install.
Is any one else having this problem?

Yes Welshjim I'm also having the same problem.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=251214 This is the only info I found. I am not asked for disk, so I don't think this is a problem. Tried to go thru office check for updates http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx then I get this:
The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer. This may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalogue used by the Office Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source if Unavailable.

Search for Office updates in the Download Catalogue

To install the update, you must have version 11.0.6412.0 of Microsoft Office Excel Viewer 2003 (I have 11.6412.6412)

Alicia J--Thanks for your post. Misery loves company. :)
I have emailed MS Critical Updates support. They auto respond that I can expect an answer within 24 hours.
If you are not already doing so, consider using Microsoft Update instead of Windows Update.
    http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
That not only gives you the latest updates for Windows and IE/OE but also updates for Office, etc. Otherwise it performs like Windows Updates.
Your version number for Excel Viewer looks a little strange. Mine is 11.0.6412.0. which is the affected version. I suspect yours is too and that is why you were offered it when Windows Update scanned your PC.

Are Alicia J and I the only people experiencing this problem?
Got a response from MS this AM:
"Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Customer Service...
I understand from your message that you are facing issues with installing Windows Update...
As a Customer Service Representative, I have created a no-charge support case for you and forwarded it to the Windows Update Support Professionals.
They have the required expertise of handling technical issues and will be contacting you within 24 hours."
I tried to install KB914451 this AM. Still no success.

To all, but especially to Alicia J.
I found some error messages that might apply but the fixes were pretty involved, so I gambled and did the following.
I uninstalled Excel Viewer and deleted all mention of the KB914451 Update (such as the .exe file which had been downloaded, but per my earlier message could not be successfully installed).
After a reboot, I downloaded a new copy of xlviewer.exe, reinstalled Excel Viewer, went to the Microsoft Update page and this time was successful in installing the KB914451 security fix for Excel Viewer.
    So the problem is resolved.
Perhaps my earlier installation of Excel Viewer was corrupt, but I feel that the new installation is only a third the size of the earlier installation. (Maybe my memory is faulty.)
I am also surprised that the version of xlviewer.exe I downloaded today is still 11.0.6412.0 which requires the Update fix. I would think MS would now offer a version that does not require patching.

Alicia J--one of the error messages was error 0x80070643
In case the above does not help you, perhaps these references will

    Welshjim,

Your fix worked for me too. Thanks. The old viewer listed in control panel was about 30MB. The newly installed version is listed at about 23MG

My excel viewer (from help, about) is version 11.8012.6412 sp1

Alicia J--The size of my new Excel Viewer installation is only 8.31MB (plus separate KB914451 fix--size unstated in Add/Remove).
As you report, the old installation was about 30MB. (So my memory was not so faulty, after all.)
My version of the new Excel Viewer is 11.8012.6505 SP1
Weird, unless it has to do with version of Windows being used. (I use WinXP Pro SP2.)
The new viewer seems to function just fine.
